Well Mark, the Pocket Knife was painted and finished. Some pictures on this thread. viewtopic.php?f=55&t=70852 But the Zinsser 123 Primer decided to let go of the wood after a couple of years and the wood started to rot.

The good news is that I figured out how to make a new one that is lighter and completely removable from my trailer. I'm currently getting the materials together to start that project and finishing up the designs. So hopefully I can start the build soon and everything there works out.

Thanks for asking.
Dave

I have always been impressed with your Pocket Knife build, and my interest in it was rekindled by your comments in the “Folding Foamie Camper a la Casita or Esterel in the Works” thread. I’m intrigued by the folding aspects, which are clever and quite ambitious! Although your pictures are very helpful, I am a bit uncertain about a few aspects of how it operates. You may have to read this several times for it to make sense (especially if I mis-judged how things are built)...

Your galley hatch has two panels, but the angle between them (in the closed hatch position) depends on whether the main body is up or down. This suggests the joint between the two panels is hinged, but the photo does not show any. Further, in your photo of the opened hatch, only the upper panel appears to be supported by the vee struts. If so, (and the panels are joined with a hinge) it seems the lower panel would “dangle” (hang down and freely swing) unless the hinge has rotation limits. Finally, it seems you would want to unlatch the lower lip of the hatch from the base before attempting to raise the main body. Maybe I am reading the pictures all wrong, so please correct me as needed. Could you add some words/pictures??

The secret is that the hinge for the bottom half of the galley door is almost perfectly in line with the hinge for the roof. So when the roof is opened, the bottom half of the hatch doesn't move.
The top half of the hatch has a little overlap over the bottom half. This prevents the bottom from folding outwards too much while lifting. It also helps with rain run off when the hatch is down. On the inside of the hatch are a couple of braces that prevent the hatch from dangling. It also keeps the hatch at the perfect angle to act as a roof while I'm in the galley. If it rains, I'm good.
I'd guess that the bottom half of the hatch door doesn't move more than 20 degrees in total.
BTW: I can open the door for the galley while the roof is down but the vee struts don't work in that position. Also, the back wall for the galley folds up so it is out of the way when I put down the roof.

Thanks for the question. I'm glad that people are still interested in it.

Thanks for the quick and very clearly described details. All works just about as I expected.

About the rear strut issue: it looks like designing a support optimized for two configurations (opened and closed body) is an interesting challenge unto itself: Moving the lower anchor from the lower body to the upper body may allow one strut pair to hold the hatch in both configurations, but it would not be optimal for both).

Also, thanks for providing your test results with foam/canvas adhesion and the like. Very valuable!
I am looking forward to your next creation!
