The XTJ

Postby mrjoe104 » Fri Jan 31, 2014 4:40 pm

Well I had this whole spiel on my design, what ive done and what im doing but my computer booted me and it was all erased so your going to get the super short verson now. So ive had this project for a while (a few years time/money issues) I liked the moby 1 XTR so I am emulating its profile and some ideas along with other ideas I have recieved from manufacturers and self builds. My rig is 5x10 that started out as a salvaged flatbed trailer. By the time I am done it should have all the bells and whistles. as you can see the profile of my rig is very simalar to the XTR. Hence the name XTJ

Well several months later and I am finally working on the trailer again. I had to stop work on the trailer due to building an addition onto our house. As far as an update, I had to tear out the 1x2 roof spars. When I started to put the plywood headliner in, the pressure from the flexing wood was too much. So I took them out and replaced them with 2x2's and some screws that had more bite to them. I also learned that my plyboard Is not as flexible as I thought and I should probably pre-bend the wood and/or score the back side of it before I try and install it again... Its funny Ive read dozens of posts about being patient with the luan (sp?) but of course I thought If I used enough staples I'd be ok. Which was WRONG.

Looking good! What is your galley setup going to be like? One thing I don't like about the Moby galley is that the upper doors open just above the c-top. So this means the c-top has to be clear to open those doors. Might be a bit of a hassle to always clear that space before opening the door. What fridge will you be running?

My galley is going to have a slide out camp chef oven/stove combo, sink, two 5 gal water tanks under the sink, and storage in the upper cabinet which is about 5x1x2. hadn't thought of the cabinet doors needing clearance... moving items on the counter-top isn't that big of a deal for me but my plans for a sink faucet are going to need some redesign. Either a lower profile faucet, a fold-able faucet or accordion doors on the upper cabinets. Or I can just run a hose from the outdoor shower that will be mounted on the side. Ill have to think on it. I wont be running a fridge unit. I decided just to stick with a cooler and some ice. This is due to cost and design.

Pre-bending the headliner. Last time I tried to install it without doing so, things broke and I think I made up some new curse words.

Thanks. It just seemed thicker than that in the pictures for some reason. Great build!

XJ - the sink is a bit of a conundrum for most. I suspect you'll find that the size you plan to make it will make it very hard and impractical to use. This is why I believe a lot of folks prefer to omit a sink from their design. I've designed my sink to be a drop in unit on the fold down table that gets mounted to the side of the TD when at camp. This allows for a bigger sink, and keeps the main galley area clean and tidy. And more countertop space.

And with only a few feet of c-top space, I'm willing to bet money that it gets pretty old and annoying to constantly move stuff out of the way to open the upper cabinet doors. :)

I have been thinking about cutting the sink from the plans. I found a folding plastic table that has a built in sink with faucet that I am considering.

After 3 days of wetting and bending this is the curve I ended up with... I am going to try scoring the back to make it a little more bendable for installation. If that doesn't work then I am going to work with the grain. The reason why I haven't already is because the trailer is 5x10 while my luan is 4x10. The trailer also narrows a few inches towards the back. So I would have to cut 2 pieces of luan down their 10' lengths without a table saw and try and taper them so the seam stays center with the trailer. Which I can see would make me super frustrated if it doesn't turn out right. Not to mention I would waist 2 sheets of luan, which would make the wife sooooooo happy when i have to buy more materials.
