Thank you. :)
I was not going for any particular style when I was selecting my wheel, I had limited options to select from due to the thing called budget. But I like what I ended up with. It is amazing how much impact wheels can bring to the whole design. 8)

Re: Compact family camper Build - Bed anchor on ceiling

Postby ryuandwings » Tue Apr 22, 2014 9:37 am

I plan to make a storable bed for my kid. (May be both of them when they are little)
It will be a 14" slide out then flip out to double the size. When it is flipped out, it would not be supported by the slide. That end will be hung from the ceiling. I searched for low profile anchor and settled on this type. It will be silver.

This thing is rated for something like 1200lbs each, so I should not have any problem supporting a bed with small kids.

I had installed support member spanning roofing spars, that's what I will be attaching the anchor to.
This thing came with bolts and backer plate, but I decided to just use screws. I measured from the top to locate the support then transferred the measurements to the ceiling. I made an error subtracting so screw locations were off by 1/4" or so and missed the support. :x Luckily, I was able to slide the anchor a little and still cover my screw up. :o

Measure twice, calculate twice, double check your math, then cut once. I need to get back to doing that.

Anyway, here is it attached to the ceiling.

Another thing I did last night was to get the profiles of fender sketched up. I think I found a size I like. I am thinking about using a half circle type. Sorry for the bad angle, I was not able to get a straight shot.

Re: Compact family camper Build - Name?

Postby ryuandwings » Thu Apr 24, 2014 7:58 pm

Ever since I started thinking about my build, it really did not look teardrop shape. To me teardrop shape has a tighter curve toward the galley area.
Mine always had similar round at front and rear. Here is my very first sketch. Things have changed so much, but overall shape and concept stayed the same.
Image

Here is where I am now.
Image

I always thought mine looked like a "bean".
It is not very creative or catchy, I'm thinking about calling mine "BeanyPOD"
What do you think? Could this mean something else? or sounds like something else.

Please let me know what you guys think.

I don't have much to report as far as any progress of my build today.
But I did get a nice shipment delivered. Thanks to Zach, I got my draw latches. :D
Image

I got 4 of them to use at galley hatch and tongue box hatch. All are keyed alike so I don't have to carry too many keys.

I have not worked out exactly how I will used them, yet. But considering these things are not cheap, I will find a way to get the implemented!

Since you've got little ones there checking it out - and want to go with a
"Bean" theme, consider "The Magic Bean"/"The Magic Camping Bean",
a-la the "Jack and the Beanstalk" children's story. Just try to steer any
name away from anything close to "Beano" ...

Other Bean memes:

"Bean There, Done This"
"Bean Of My Dreams"
"(The) Leguma Bean"
"To Bean, Or Not To Bean"
"The Human('s) Bean"
"Bean(s) to Me"
"American Camping Bean" [a take on 'Mexican jumping beans']

Cheers

I like it straight up, just "The Bean" or "Bean Pod". Beany Pod sounds like a weird hat or child's nickname to me (ala Beanie Baby).

Thank you for you suggestions.
I like "The Magic Bean".

We did not consider too much, but I don't want people to think beans=gas...

I thought about the "Beany" thing with beanie baby.
Since our kids are small so I thought giving a name that is "cute" may work, but they will grow up and this trailer to be with us for long time. :)

Re: Compact family camper Build - Roof!

Postby ryuandwings » Tue Apr 29, 2014 12:46 pm

Made a big progress this past weekend.
I started to put 1/8" Baltic Birch on the roof!
I checked all wiring running through the roof and everything was good.

I first put second layer of insulation board. I had planned to use 2 layers of 1" foam board, but because of wires (I did not cut grooves for the wires in the insulation board too good), I decided to use 3/4" board in some places. I cut them undersized a little to fill the gap with spray foam insulation.
Image

Once that is cured, I trimmed and sanded some high spots, then glue downed the first layer of Baltic Birch.
Image
Image
I started to see the end of my long jurney once the roof Baltic Birch is went up! :)

I also accomplished to insulate back side of tongue box storage area and put finish panel there. I also put trims to cover the edges. Now that was done, I was able to put the framing for storage hatch door back in.
Image

One last thing I did was to make the wall of tongue hatch area thicker.
I had used 1/2" plywood for the tongue box wall, but I started think that was too thin. To make them a little thicker, I decided to add a layer of 1/8" Baltic Birch from inside. This also hid a mistake I made earlier.
When I cut a wall of tongue box, I did not measure twice so it did not come out right. Instead of buying more material, I spliced and recut. Off course I could see a joint inside of the tongue box.
Image

By adding a layer of Baltic Birch, that joint will not be visible.
Image

I did the same on the other side.
Image

My next task is to add second layer of Baltic Birch on the roof and move on to the doors and fixing the main hatch.
