Doug,

I was going to give you crap about the table leg just being a piece of plywood and then I looked closer at the grain. As always, a unique blend of practicality and beautiful wood working.

Re: '47 MobilGlide finished..done

Postby doug hodder » Thu Feb 25, 2016 11:41 pm

I finished up the MobilGlide at the end of January. All it needs now is to wait till late May and I'll drag it out of the garage and do the final bolt up on the axle and seal the bottom where the body fits on the deck. It's not a real restoration as they were pretty "plain Jane". This is more of a resto mod. I sewed up my own cushions, got a Marti awning to match, quilt, place mats, curtains made and installed. Picked up some 1/4" chrome trim for the center of the ice box and around the wheel well openings. Also have a vintage 1947 5 tube radio that has been restored. I also still need to install the viper alarm system that I picked up off E-bay. It's pre-wired, just need to mount the board in the trailer. While I'm sure there are more of these that haven't been unearthed, rumor has it that there currently are only about 25 of these that are known. We have started a MobilGroup on FBook and have only managed to wrangle 8 people into it with trailers. There are only 2 that are currently on the road that we have been able to find, this being one, or will be when I get it out. Not a real stylish trailer from the exterior and they were built pretty cheaply, however, I like it, I gotta... as I dumped a ton of time and money into this one.

It's coming out party will be the Fallen Leaf Lake gathering up near Lake Tahoe this June. I'm looking forward to getting the new artillery wheels that have been sitting in the living room for about a year on it. For outdoor cooking, which most of it will be, I'm planning on using my restored 1937 Coleman 371 travel trailer hot plate. It will get a color matching wind wing set with a vintage late 40's Meyercord decal on it, working on that now. Dishes are white with black trim enamelware, as are the matching cooking pots and pans. Ice box is scrounged from a 1957 Mercury trailer and has been blasted and repainted, and now has 2" foam insulation on it, handles and hinges are original. Mattress is an 8" queen Memory foam cut down to 54" wide, so it's a long full or a narrow queen....sleeps really well, have taken some naps in it.

Interior is birch with mahogany accents, marmoleum floor, and nickle plated hinges with jadite glass knobs, handles, spice bottles. Sound system is hidden in front cabinet, not visible, CD, AM,FM, Sirius, and all the other current crap on it. The only thing I paid to have done was the awning...and PS...Marty makes an awesome awning! Thanks for following my build.

Here's some pics of it:

Great job Doug. You have covered all the bases perfectly. Now go out and enjoy it. If you set out a jar with "tips for tours", you will pay for the thing quickly. Maybe make a cool
"CLOSED" sign when you want to eat dinner.
