Hi Dave,

Great video. It's a real headturner and beautifully executed. An inspiration to all who are struggling to get their own teardrop on the road (like me ) !

Contratulations

Thanks Larry! Conch Fritter isn't finished, probably never will be, but I will be starting on some more finish work and alterations in a week or so. Still really hot here in Florida. Main goals are to have the galley system cut down by 1" in height, add in my roller bearing slide system, finish up the wings and exterior trim panel and hopefully have the "pirate chest" tongue box built before the November gathering.

Great job Dave... You really got her knocked out in a hurry compared to most of us! Glad you are getting to enjoy it this summer. Maybe next spring for me! :)

Time to get back to the finishin'

Postby daveesl77 » Mon Sep 21, 2015 6:00 pm

Well, in June we took Conch Fritter out on her inaugural run and it worked great. Over 2,400 miles, only one problem fixed in a couple of hours on the first day. About 3 weeks total time. Got back home, too hot to work on it, so waited until now to get back to the "finishin'"

The summer heat is breaking in Florida, so time to get back to work on Conch Fritter. Pulled out the galley and have cut it down by 1" in height. I was just too close on the tolerances before. This lets me install the roller bearings that were supposed to go in originally. Plus I can do some additions and alterations I wanted to do.

I'll get the trim finished on the exterior and get the wings finished. Then I'll start on building the "pirate chest" facade for the front box. Install the aluminum rock guard on the front.

Next will be to finish up the ducted ventilation system. Get the fans installed properly. Also need to put in the rails in front of the shelves and a bit of interior trim.

Will get the internal water system finalized, tank and pump is installed just not plumbed yet.

Finally, I'll be pulling out the 40 amp charge system from the RV converter I got from the scrap yard and replace it with one of my smart chargers. That old system is noisy and generates a ton of heat, but hey, it only cost $5 and the main thing I wanted it for was the 120v breakers and 12v fuse panel.

I left it sitting out in full Florida weather all summer, with it essentially uncovered for the last 2 months. Kept at least 2 of the wiley windows open at all times just to check for water intrusion. Nothing, not a drop and we have had some kick butt storms.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Anastasia in November, but will be going down to Long Key SP for a week in mid October.

Back to the fritter and loving it!

An update on the build and places Conch Fritter has gone since the last post. We went down the the Keys for a week in mid-October. I love Long Key State Park, the sites, while almost impossible to get, are all right on the ocean. And I do mean right on the ocean, like 5' . Then in November we did the Anastasia State Park gathering, that was just great fun and so nice to see everyone. I figure in January I'll start building the "pirate chest" tongue box, finish up the trim on the interior, add in some addition LED's. I'll be building the diy PetCool for the AC and the system for the hotwater heater several of us have been playing around with for awhile.

Then maybe, just maybe, we'll head out west in April. I get a bit crazy if I don't see NM, CO or Utah for a year or so, and it has now been almost 2 years. I also love Glacier and the Yellowstone area.

Here is wishing a GREAT NEW YEAR to EVERYONE!!!!

Re: Conch Fritter Woodie - Gets its topside painted

Postby daveesl77 » Thu Oct 27, 2016 12:56 pm

Conch Fritter finally got its topsides painted. It is really much more of a greenish tint that the bluish that shows in this photo. I shot the photo with my cheap Chinese GoPro knockoff, so everything looks more blue. Anyway, we like the color. Next up is to strip down all of the exterior cedar strips, as it got a mold underneath the polyurethane, so this fall/winter I'll get to strip it all down to bare wood and start up again. In addition we'll be doing an aluminum paint over the wings, front and bottom trim boards. This will give it the "metal" look. I can then add in the deco style accents and swirls to both the wing area and the forward circle area.

And no, still haven't built the "pirate chest" tongue box, but I did get all the wood cut to build it.

Looks nice! Sorry to hear about the mold...do you know why that happened?

Maybe just sanding the polyurethane off will be enough? Are you sure it is mold? I would recommend light glass cloth with epoxy and then polyurethane as a longer lasting protection for your nice cedar strips.

I agree with OP. Epoxy is the way to go. Just like a boat!

So glad your build resurfaced. Excellent work! About the Wiley Windows in a place like Central FL, did you attach no-seeum mesh or anything to keep the biters out?
