Thommy's Tiny Toter Tear Trailer

Postby Thommyknocker » Fri Nov 13, 2015 12:34 pm

We've finally narrowed down our list of features we want for our teardrop.

4' wide, so it's not wider that the 50 Chevy, won't have to use huge mirrors lol
Empty inside, it's main use is to tote the handicap scooter around to car shows. Plenty of room for a cooler, chairs and the sun shade also.
( I have a twin air mattress I can store in it so my wife can take a nap)
4' tall inside (ish) to take the big scooter without having to remove the seat. It's about 6" taller than the car on the hoof.
1/2" AC plywood construction, skinned with FRP smooth side out. I'm either going to paint it to match the car or have it wrapped
1 side door and the rear hatch only.

Other features (open for revision)
storage area for small propane bottles
wired to charge a battery jump pack, USB outlets and a few lights
tie down tracking on the floor

To be figured out:
Under Floor Storage, how big?
Ramp storage and design, need some type of ramp to load the big scooter with (300 lbs) The small scooter breaks down easily so it's not the problem
( I picked up a collapsible ramp set, but the sides are too tall)
Fenders: I'm thinking about a motorcycle fender, mounted to the axle

There is a pic of the car here, and some earlier ideas

And the design, which I made in Solidworks

First actual step was to fab a receiver for the car.

Will you be able to push a 300 lb scooter up a ramp? Or will you use a winch?

I hope I can drive it up, then finish breaking it down a little more fit.

Perhaps a test is in order. Find an elevation change that is the same as your planned finished floor height, set the ramps up and see if the scooter will do it.

Knowing ahead would be better. If it presents problems, maybe you can still work something out, or into the build that will help (longer ramps, lower floor height, beaver tail, winch, etc.)

Thanks, I'm sure I can figure something out....

Finished the tongue extension. It's probably a little long but I can always cut a bit off later

Gluing isn't as cool (or fast) as welding.

I'll use some screws next time

Quick progress, and looking great and strong! I envy your Solidworks skills, did you learn it by yourself?
