Postby Gunguy05 » Thu Nov 26, 2015 11:34 am

Not sure of the name, but we have a couple tenative designs we are working on. This will be more of a traditional design this time 5x9, 4 ft tall.

Just a teaser.. more to come later.

We are looking at two different designs. One with a standard hatch, the other with a 1/2 hatch design.

Full hatch will allow a cooler under the counter, the 1/2 will allow a little more length inside and a lower counter top. This one is for my parents, and my mom is a hair over 5 ft.

Just thinking out loud here. Any comments or criticism are welcome.

Either will be on a Ironton 5x8, unless I get the wild hair to try and weld.

How many inches do you lose with the rolled under nose?

I can't remember exactly, but I think about 4 or 5.

I squeezed the room from the back since we wouldn't need the depth under the counter for the cooler with the 1/3 hatch.

There is a $25 gift card for orders over $250 and a $50 gift card for orders over $500. Get something else you need, and call the trailer $399...

Ok. So here is what I did. One of the issues with getting the trailer was getting it to my house. Just before I was about to order it and a wheel dolly for it... and maybe something else to get me up to the 500.. I looked at Amazon.

They had the trailer for the same price, 450, and it was free shipping, to my front door. SO.. That saved my spending another 50 bucks right now, to get the gift card, and I didn't have to find a way to get it home, about an 1 1/2 hrs both ways to the closest Northern Tool from me.

So, thanks for the heads up Alan. This at least got me pointed in the right direction as far as the sale price :D :D Looks like it will be here next week some time!

Off to bed

Sweet deal! Glad it worked out for you. I checked this morning... it's now at $499 on Amazon, so that worked out great for you!.

Brian:

Two types of hatch bottom joints. The second one is water proof. On the first one, I was getting some water in through capillary action. I stopped it with a small 90º piece of D-seal at both ends. But it was a head scratcher for a while. Thank goodness for an epoxy finish on the galley floor.

Re: The Regal Eagle Jr (#2) 5x9

Postby Gunguy05 » Tue Dec 01, 2015 10:13 pm

Ok. So here is the Final Draft. We did a little more tweaking to the design, and this is what (for the most part) we are going to build. It will be a 5x9, built on a northern tool trailer.

Imagedesign 7 dimensions by gunguy05, on Flickr
There were a few key design considerations here..

1. My mom is short ... so the back cabinets need to be as low as, and as shallow as will work so that she can reach them. Our trailer is 5ft tall and she laughs when I ask her to get stuff off of the top shelf in the back. We tweaked the back a bit to make this work. There will be a cooler on the right (with a higher counter top) and a slightly lower counter on the left.

2. We will install an ac in the back very similar to the Little Swiss Teardrop. I like the design of his vent and I think it works here. Dad didn't want to have an AC sticking out the front, and in GA an AC is a must. We had to shift things here and there so that the vent would clear things in the back, namely the back crossmember on the trailer, but I think it will work.

3. I have found an alternate source that I haven't see mentioned here for doors.. and we will be using it. Challenger Doors, out in Indiana. I already have a quote from them and they are the best price that I have found anywhere. The doors look very familiar, and I think they probably produce for some of the other places that will remain nameless.

4. I don't show either in the drawing , but we will be adding a tongue exension and a tongue box. The tongue box will hold the battery, charger, and maybe a few other odds and ends.

5. The axle will move back a few inches.. I didn't know how to do this in the drawing since I imported the trailer from another source (Ryan from the Wyoming woody).

The "thing" looks great.

You're enthusiasm is leaking. Can't wait to see the photos of this 'drop parked next to yours this summer.

Thank you Tony. I have been eyeing what I would do different, better, more streamlined since about 1/2 through the first one. Now I'm finally getting to put it into action.

Because the shipping company called yesterday and said "hey, we are delivering your trailer tomorrow".. I had the day off. No worries, I took full advantage to get a good jump on things. I got the template for the walls cut out. Just a basic profile 24" radius at the front. I took off the original turn back on because it used up so much floor space. Going straight up the front now. Photo is cropped off just at the front, but it was as far back as I could get in my shed.

ImageIMG_20151202_091920 by gunguy05, on Flickr

For the back I played with different curves and ended up going with a 42" radius. I did turn this one in a bit at the bottom. Nothing exact or measured, I just ended up using a piece of lexan to bend what looked like a smooth curve and went for it.

ImageIMG_20151202_075558 by gunguy05, on Flickr

After I this I was able to get most of the framing for the side wall cut and glued up. The photo below shows about 1/2 way through, I didn't take a photo when I stopped work for the night, but I have ouly 4 or 5 more pieces to cut a glue up for the cabinets.

ImageIMG_20151202_143337 by gunguy05, on Flickr

Oh yeah, the trailer.. It showed up about 12:30 or so, in 3 boxes.

I looked back at things and it took me about a week to get this much done last time.. So I would saw experience is working in my favor here. I won't have much time to work until next weekend as we are tied up with football games, camping , tailgating and such this weekend for our last home game.. might post a photo of our tailgating rig later... it's a little different than the rest :R
