Another build winds down .. the camping begins

Postby cubbyboy57 » Mon May 16, 2016 3:15 pm

After much reading and thought, I have started my build. I am planning on a very small, very simple build (hopefully so I can finish). I work a lot and don't get a lot of free time, but have spent the last 4 weekends buying and building a HF trailer, buying and cutting out 2 doors and the radius and working on the frame for the galley hatch. I am building a square back trailer with a rounded front. I have more pictures in my gallery of what I have done so far. I am wanting to try to build it as a "pod" and bolt it to the trailer as I like having the trailer for hauling other stuff. I can store the "pod" at work, so getting it on and off won't be too much work. Will know when I get the sides up and can see how much work it is to line up the box. Planning on covering it in canvas and painting it. Hopefully can stand up the sides this weekend.

Thanks to all who have gone before and left their wisdom and journals for us newbies -- I wouldn't have got this far without them!

So I spent a few hours this week getting the sides up - looking forward to working this weekend on finishing the frame and maybe starting the canvas.

I got to where I was going to frame the AC and dug out the window unit a neighbor gave me a couple of years ago. I plugged it in and noticed something was rattling in the squirrel cage. I ended up disassembling the whole thing as it was full of dog hair, leaves, and dirt. Was contemplating purchasing a new $109 unit at Wallymart, but decided to save a few dollars and turn this one into a split system. I had to move 4 control wires and a compressor wire. Went to HF and got a trailer wire kit. I ordered some deck plate covers and 4in hose from Amazon.
A few more pictures of my hack job in the gallery.

Hope to finish this tomorrow and back to the trailer!

I have a new appreciation for the people who have documented their builds -- I always get too busy and forget to take pictures. I put in my FRP ceiling and insulated the roof. Finished the frame and started to glue the canvas on. Here are a couple of pictures and more in the gallery.

Work has picked up, so not getting much done lately -- finished priming and sanding and started painting the main box. This weekend hung the hatch and started canvas on it. Took a small break to grill some meat for my holiday lunch.

Looking great. I like the canvas over the plywood, nice and smooth. n the last pic, is that a shadow or a stain on the bottom right corner?

That would be my fat head shadow - it is finishing nice, didn't know how forgiving the canvas would be but I like the ease and look of it. It is mainly Gripper so far, just got the first real paint coat on it.

I trimmed the hatch out and will start priming it this week.

Thanks,
james

You are making great progress (I'm embarrassed how long mine took) and that is a great shop to work in. Look forward to seeing your first camping pictures.

In 2016, I received a kidney transplant, finished my teardrop, and took it on the road! In 2017 I sold it and am back to car camping.
Thanks to all forum members who provided advice about my build and posted info to help me get started.
