..a Slumbercoach facsimile

Postby prohandyman » Sun Aug 14, 2016 4:48 pm

Well I thought I was done building at 30 campers but maybe not. Closed my shop ....but still have the home garage! Maybe a few extra arthritis pills and will work thru the pain!
I have always wanted to do a Slumbercoach like Len Dadonna's. Going to be as vintage looking as I an make it.
Well an opportunity presented itself for a frame, with title, and aaaaawayyy we go!! Just can't quit building I guess!

This is Len's....damn gorgeous ain't it?

Good for you Dan, as they say with arthritis, you need to keep moving, so push on.
It's a hard habit to break building trailers, my wife says I'm not building any more since I owe her/us a new custom dining table.
I'm free after that though.

I was enamored with Len's Slumbercoach when I built my first one in '06, and never got around to doing something similar. So will take it on now. I have been scouring the web and this forum but cannot find the dimensions anywhere. But that never stopped me before! So little info is available.

Floor is done, and a stack of birch plywood means walls are next! Whitewall tires and new 15" rims on the way!

fenders?

Postby lgatlin » Wed Aug 31, 2016 11:28 pm

Love the shape of this - I'm thinking of a slumbercoach style for our next build, so I am following this one with interest. I am curious as to where you were able to source the fenders!

Fenders from Speedway motors. They are reproduction 35-37 Ford truck fenders, and they have the flat flange on the back side for mounting to the flat side of the camper. A lot of early auto fenders have the shape we like but don't have a flat mounting surface on the back. Now you have to really want them... They are $200 each plus shipping! Pretty damn pricey, but I think they are worth the look.
The black fenders in this pic are from an early Chevy truck. I found these at a local swap meet for $50 , original 37 Chevy steel, some rust and damage, but a little tlc and bonds was required.115805.

Compare to the same camper above , originally with these fenders!34959.

Thanks! I've bookmarked that source. I was afraid they'd be pricey and indeed they are -- but you're right, they are probably worth the price to get the look. I've been looking at wooden fenders which I could make easily enough - it's all a matter of $$ as it always seems to come down to! I do like that they're relatively lightweight, since we're looking to build a very lightweight TD this time around ---
