First TD build

Postby kdbstlrfan » Thu Aug 18, 2016 3:51 pm

Aug. 17, 2016 : Day one. I started modifying the trailer. It was 8'x8' and it will end up 8' x 10'. This was a snowmobile trailer in its former life. Can't wait to get some wood on it and make it useful once again!!

Well, I got most of the welding on the trailer done. Need to get the tongue remounted and clean up a couple spots. Then get primer and paint on it. Almost ready to start building the floor.

Good, are you keeping the smaller wheels on it?

So I have gone through my first redesign. I have taken the trailer apart almost completely. After doing some calculations i realized that the tires would be rubbing the sides of the camper if I lower the deck. To fix that issue, I am narrowing the trailer deck by 4 inches. This will allow me to drop the deck and put bigger wheels on it. Sure am glad I know how to weld. Thanks Dad for teaching me as a kid!!

It has been a few weeks. Funny how life gets in the way of what we really want to be doing. In the past few weeks I have ordered and received parts like the Hurricane Hinge, roof vent, electrical parts, hinges, windows etc.... I have also completed the welding on the trailer and sanded and painted it. The floor has been built (insulated with 3/4" solid foam insulation). This morning I put the last coat of protectant on the bottom side of the floor. I will be permanently bolting the floor to the trailer frame tomorrow and then I can start on fabrication of the walls. Can't wait to get some vertical progress!! here is a pic of the floor resting on the trailer drying.

I have made progress in the last couple days. I completed the lap joints on the exterior skin. I have created 2 pieces of 1/2 inch birch ply 12 feet long. Today I cut my template out of underlayment. I will be out of town tomorrow but Monday I plan to get started on construction of the walls. It is really becoming a reality now that the template is cut and I can see what the profile of the TD will be!!
