back in 1936 my grandfather w/ the help of my 13yo dad built a "camping trailer" on a MODEL A suspension

in the 1956 dad w/ my 13yo help rebuilt/replaced all the wood & canvas and added an ice box, that kept our food cold for a week+ w/ just a 25# block of ice(eat your heart out Yeti), to the front

the trailer was later sold to the family of camping friends that passed it down thru 2 generations

now as luck would have it it is in my trailer yard awaiting the next stages of it's life

the wood is very sad, the canvas is long gone butt all the metal framing & the original MODEL A suspension are still in tact only needing blasting & refinishing

me thinks i see the beginning of another family heirloom in the making

the frame & suspension on this build appear quite good and should last a few lifetimes

GREAT BEGINNINGS

WE'RE WATCHING...

I'm going to have about a 1 inch gap between the fenders and the wall of the teardrop. I decided to put a backing on the fenders. I still need to weld them on

I got the second coat of POR15 on. I have gone back and forth on spraying the frame with bed liner or painting it. I have decided to paint it with POR15 2K Urethane paint. Hopefully will get that done this week

Got the fenders welded on. I was going to bolt them on so I could remove them when putting the teardrop sides on but run into some issues so they got welded.

Did a little more painting on the fenders after grinding down the welds.

Overall a Quart of POR15 gave me 2 coats and I was able to get 2 coats from the 2K paint as well

Well your fenders won't fall off now. That Por-15 is some awesome stuff. It's time to start making saw dust now. :)

Those suckers are definitely on there. I will have to head to Dallas to get some 5x10 sheets of plywood. Couldn't find any here in Oklahoma City. Will be doing that on Veterans day. So next weekend I will wire the jeep up for the 7 plug.

I am going to bed liner spray my teardrop red to match the jeep. I decided to bed liner spray the fenders too. That way they match the texture/look of the teardrop. I also got the chains and hitch on. So it is ready for a test spin. I measured and checked square as many times as I could so hopefully this puppy pulls straight!

Picked up most of my wood. Still need to mock up a template before start making cuts. Getting closer!

Looking good. What fenders did you use, and did you have to modify them to fit over the relatively large tires?

I went with the Single Axle Jeep Style Fender - 10 Inches Wide x 36 Inches Long x 19.25 Inches High - Fits 13 - 15 Inch Tires. I did have to modify them. I looked at some pictures online without the fenders being modified and that just looked like the fender sat up really high on the teardrop wall. I wanted mine to be a little lower.

I cut slits in the 4 curved part of the fender. That allowed them to be push/pulled out pretty easily. I took the deflection of the timbren axle which was about 6 inches. So I put a 4x4 and 2x4 piece of wood on top of the tire. From there I just kind of eye balled it out to what looked decent. Which that took the length of the fender from 36 inches to 44 inches and still high enough that even if my wheel bottoms out it still wont hit the fender. It definitely was trial and error and made a couple of mistakes and learned a couple lessons.

I didn't find any that were wider than 10 inches. I would of liked a 12 inch fender. Given the time I spent with these fenders, I probably should of got some 1 inch tubing, 14 gauge sheet metal and try to make them myself.

I'm excited about the project. I think a 5x10 is a little big for doing a lot of rock crawling but should still be small enough to get into some rough terrain.

Going to put a 12v freezer and solar in it so I can do some off grid trips.
