Removable teardrop project by Joni

Postby JonchaVilla » Mon Oct 31, 2016 2:40 am

It has begun :D

I'm building a removable teardrop/sleeping cabin for the common utility trailer. I just bought the trailer two weeks ago.

The measure is 120cmx280cm so it will be quite narrow. Suitable for one person. I bought it used and fixed the lights. I need to change the plywood. I'll do it at the beginning of january.

I built the floor frame. I'll add 0,9mm plywood to the frame and insulate it with polyurethane. The thing is that I'm not going to attach it to the trailer. The sleeping cabin will be attached from the side walls to the sidehulls of the utility trailer using this kind of locks:

I'm quite new to building projects like this. I have done some basic repairing projects in my home but nothing this big. I'm excited :) Let's see how it ends.

That is a really good start to the project! I can't wait to see more progress.

I haven't wrote in a long time, but the project goes on. I bought some plywood and cut the sideprofiles. The outer walls are made of film-plywood (is this correct in english?). The inner walls are just birch plywood.

I also cut a window opening. Decide to make it round :) The next phase is to cut the door opening. That needs some planning first.

I'm using 30mm wood in the hull. Need to add some more and insulate. I'm expecting to make the walls ready in two weeks. I'm processing slowly because I only have 1-2 hours spare time per day. Still I'm hoping to get this ready before summer,

As a fellow removable builder I am curious about your plans for getting it on and off. Lift or slide?

Sliding is the best option. The floor of that trailer is possible to release so, that the rear end hits the ground even if attached to car. It'll make thing easier.

Here is a suggestion. Think about mounting a winch from a boat trailer on the front to haul it on with. Make sure you build a strong point on the camper to hook on.
