Started skinning the out side of the Raven today.. :applause:

1/4" Red Oak skin clamped on temporary to rout the door and window opening.

Some might ask. Why didn't I wait to rout the window and door opening til after the skin was glued on?
I did it this way, so I would know exactly where I could staple the skin along the edge of the openings, while gluing it and clamping it on. It was actually easier for me.

155925 155924

Then holding a scrap piece of poplar on backside of skin, I moved the scrap piece along with the router, using a flush router bit. I routed the back radius of the skin (Over sized)

155927 155926

All routed to size, ready to remove and glue on..

155928

Glued skin on using PL Premium, used a laminate roller to make sure there was good contact with the glue. Clamped and then stapled with wide crown staples every where that would be covered by wood trim later. (Not to blow through the 1/4" plywood, I used a low air setting with regulator)

155929 155930

Will let this dry over night. Tomorrow will do the front half of the skin.. and start on the other side..

The gap showing at the bottom of the skin will get a filler piece of red oak. Part of it will be covered with the wood trim that goes on to cover the trailer.

Later I will frame out the red oak with 3/4" x 3 1/2" or 3/4"x 4 wood and around the windows and the door.
Debating on finishing the red oak clear or staining. Wondering if I should do clear on the panels with stained oak for the trim, or visa versa. Or use a different species of wood entirely for the trim.

The top of this tear is going to be PMF'd and painted (color to be determined later).

Anyone have any suggestions what they think would look the best?

Your tear is really shaping up sweet. I really like the profile. That is going to be one super sharp camper when you're done!

Thank you, Mr. Lahey
It's went through a lot of changes from the start to get this far. Trailer changes, profile changes, material changes, etc. Still some things have not been decided. :NC
Your build is coming along really well. Love the wood working you're doing to the interior..
Funny how each of these shows a part of who we are..

Thanks clam and Tom, you guys keep me motivated.. :D :applause:
Skin going on is very rewarding, , getting any part completed, is rewarding now.. :wine:
Doing posts, no matter how small they may seem to me, also keeps me motivated. Shows me what I have accomplished :)

Which brings us to today..
Taking it slow still, I made up my mind I needed to get another piece of the skin on, and could relax after.. went over to the shop again this morning early. Opened it up, got the fan started.. it was 98 degrees in the shop at 7:30 this morning already.

Started on the front passenger side skin, rough routed the door area and front curve, then glued with PL P, stapled and clamped.

155977 155978 155979

I put the plywood seam right above the door. Once everything is finished and trimmed out, the seam will be hidden.. the PL P squeezed out of the plywood joint, so I know it is sealed really well where the trim goes.. it also squeezed out around the edges, leaving no visual gaps anywhere to be seen.. when I finished with this piece of skin, I needed a rest break, and the temp in the shop had risen to 102.. :sweaty:
Last night around 7 pm, UPS delivered my canvas for the top PMF, so it's here waiting.. :applause:

One delay or another, tear time as taken a nose dive. .. now it's moved back into the smaller shop.. did do some rearranging in the shop before the move.. so a lot better access all the way around the tear to work on it..
Started this last November, telling myself "Oh I can have it campable by April". Nope, didn't happen..
Looking to have it ready by September, well it rolled around, still not campable..
Completely changed my thinking on all of this... It will be done when it's done.... :NC
Now it's October,, close to kicking a year in the bottom...
Have everything bought and here to make it campable,, if everything else in life and weather will co-operate so I can get back to work on it..
Hopefully, I will have it campable by the 6th Tuesday of the 13th month and take it camping... :applause: We'll see..... Have fun out there,, and be careful.....

Hang in there David,

I too thought my build would be one year. After the first anniversary came in and went, I resided myself to getting it done on teardrop time.

Enjoy the build and don't let it become work.

Take care,
Tom

I'm catching up after being out for a few weeks. Looks like you're doing well. Hang in there. I thought I'd be done in three months and it's been 14. And still more little things to do. Let me know if I can help in any way.
