Tiny Trailer Frame Up Rebuild - SLEEPER

Postby 2bits » Thu Jul 19, 2018 9:28 pm

I just sold my ’68 Scotty that I have camped in for the past three years and at long last I moved the '78 Play Mor into the garage and started working on it. Since this is the beginning of the build thread and the first time I have done one on years, I will digress for a moment on the history of the camper… My mom bought this to escape the heat on their property while they were working outside before their house was built and then it sat for 20 years unused. She gave it to me after I built a greenhouse for her. I am the 4th owner and I have all the original paperwork on it and receipts for every title transfer since it was new. It was totally trashed inside so I gutted it after getting it home and it has been sitting, waiting on me for four years but hey, I’ve been busy… While it was sitting in the woods on my property, I snapped a cool photo which was published in Vintage Camper Trailers magazine so it’s already “famous” haha.

My personal likes about this camper are that it is a 1978 but could easily pass as a 1968 with it’s vintage style rounded corners. Also, I have never seen a PlayMor that WASN’T a trunk back so I think that is pretty cool too since I don’t care for those (sorry). I love that the camper hasn’t been repainted or gooped up with silicone. Lastly, I just love the simplicity the the camper, it is low to the ground but has no drop floor, all the utility openings are located in one place on the side of the camper and moreover they are minimal and small. Along those same lines, there is no outside storage door; I really like that from a restoration standpoint and for the uncluttered look it provides. I won’t have any propane so I will be mounting my tongue box that I pulled off my old camper for all my outside gear and can store my easy up and other gear under the couch seat. The best part about this is that I am building this using my own plans and can make it 100% me.

OK introduction aside, today I removed all the windows, lights, badges and pretty much anything that is screwed onto the outside except the corner edge trim and door frame. Going to take the side walls off in one piece since they are perfect except around the edges. Also going to re use all the aluminum skin except the top roof section which will be a new, probably white, one piece replacement.

Here are some pics! When it was at my mom’s, then as it looks today at my place.

Here is the gutted interior and my floor plan. I wanted a 2 person couch/dinette. a Twin bed with an option to Full size, and a kitchen with lots of countertop space AND a full bath, all in a 10 foot camper.

Love it! I wondered about the tool box. Good luck! Anxious to see your progress. (I noted, you gotta couple chicks to model with it in the 1st image!) Dave

Hey Thomas, Welcome back to the builder side of things! You have yourself a real diamond in the rough there that should turn out very nice.

I like your plan and am looking forward to seeing this one done.

Thanks KC, I've actually been on the builder side of things a while just haven't done a build journal in a long time, I just finished my '68 Scotty which is being picked up this weekend and I am all done with my '63 Shasta except for paint. I haven't been posting here because my sattelitte internet messes up the login timing and I get logged out after 60 seconds LOL. I just miss the old forum days though so here I am!

Lookin' good. Remember at this point, you can remove one wall, grab a tarp and sleeping bag and go camping.

I got the other wall down and built a stand on top of the trailer to stack them on and it is right at a perfect working height for me to rebuild them before I do the floor. This rack is a great way to store the walls and if I need to move everything out of the garage I just hook up the trailer once the wheels are back on. The last pic is a good shot of one of the walls that shows how perfect they are except around the edges.

I got my first wall done! I just needed to go all around the perimeter and the window and everything else was good. I added some extra framing in the middle where it seemed like it would appreciate it. 120 pocket holes if my count is right.

Thomas, I sure enjoy your build threads. Your attention to detail, during the build, with photo emphasis, is a thing to behold....
Thanks

Thanks very much!! To that end.... when moving the wall to the other garage for storage today i paused to get a photo with a better view LOL I guess to me it is just fun making photo and albums and presentations. Comes from being in a band and working as a manager I guess, now it's all beer and peanuts and no insurance!

Re: Tiny Trailer Frame Up Rebuild - 1978 Play Mor

Postby aggie79 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:18 pm

HI Thomas! How are things?

I haven't looked at build journals in a couple of weeks other than the cargo trailer conversion section. (Unlike the Stones, time isn't on my side, and hasn't been so ever since my dad passed away about four years ago.) To my surprise, when I looked today you had started a build journal.

I will be following your build closely. Your layout seems perfect to me! Linda and I are looking for a small trailer with a bathroom and shower, and your design checks most if not all of the boxes.

BTW, I love - and have sincere jealousy for - your shop. I've been building new cabinets and mobile tool stands in my garage to gain more space. Once I finish that, I am going to complete the window a/c unit "hack" for the SB, and then will put it up for sale this spring to free up garage space and to be able to start another project.

Good to see and hear from you again!

Take care,
Tom
