Building my Dutch Woody teardrop

Postby Joost1207 » Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:52 pm

Hi everyone,
My name is Joost, 33 and living in The Netherlands. In this post I'll share the building process of my woody teardrop.

So two years ago I simply got addicted to TNTTT and spent my nights reading all the wonderful build journals, construction tips and design ideas. During the Christmas holiday I decided to take on building my own woody teardrop. With a rough sketch in mind I bought a second hand trailer and built my woody frame from plywood. After that it took a few weekends to add cabinets, fit the door and window, wire the electrics (12v/240v), paint, etc. It was a great adventure where every small job turned out both easier than expected and more complicated than expected. Luckily wood is very forgiving ;-)

My girlfriend and I took our Woody camping to Maastricht for a weekend and, when that turned out great, even took Woody for a three-week holiday to France. A 3000km trip and it came back in one piece. I'll confess that the waterproofing wasn't perfect, but apart from that it was a wonderful way to camp. And it even made the Dutch national newspaper Trouw: https://www.trouw.nl/es-b1762a52

With my first son on the way I'm thinking of building a slightly larger one in the future. I'm very thankful for all the inspiration and tips shared on TNTTT, it's a pleasure to be contributing my own experience. I'll add the build pics below, about 40 in total.

Thanks,
Joost

Pictures from the first build phase. From sheets of ply to the woody frame in about a week (with freezing temperatures over Christmas).

The second build phase was about two months later. Fitting door and window, painting, cabinets, electrics. I think about 5 weekends.

A teardrop is never finished, I kept myself busy with small improvements to the kitchen, curtains, lighting, etc. But most importantly, we took Woody on our first trip to Maastricht and over summer spent 3 weeks camping in France!

Joost, very impressive. As your new family addition gets closer if you haven't finished #2 build consider a hammock style bed in your current teardrop. There are some wonderful ideas here on tnttt about similar sleeping arrangements.

An example (I don't know who's kid this was so I blurred the face for privacy)...

Hi TIm, thanks for the suggestion. Was thinking about this, but it would block my cabinets. And apart from that the 120cm bed is a bit on the cozy side. So was thinking of building #2 with the same length (about 250cm) and increase width to a bed of 160/180cm. One other issue is that I have a dog since 1 year. Was thinking of adding a dog house as well :) Saw you have a dog too? Sleeps outside in the tent?
Best,
Joost

Oh no, Rosie is with me in the cabin. That's the only time she sleeps on our bed other than during infrequent periods of fireworks in our neighborhood.
