Teardrop build in the Netherlands (Wyoming Woody style)

Postby Jan-Willem » Thu Sep 19, 2019 5:39 am

Hi there, I'm Jan-Willem from the Netherlands en just started to build my own teardrop trailer in the Netherlands.

At first i've been reading the whole internet for inspiration and how-to's. I've found the website of the Wyoming Woody ans i liked the shape of it. Only i want a mattress of 200cm and that doesn't fit in the plans. I scaled everything 10% up and than it will fit.
At the same time i looked for a suitable trailer. In Europe you can't buy trailers like Northern Tool is selling.

I've found an empty caravan-chassis from the brand ALKO (most used in Europe) just 30 kilometers from our house and it only cost me 50 EURO. Got the trailer and parked it in my garden where the build is gonna have place.
Trailer is with brakes and total weight can be 1000 kilogram, i hope the teardrop is not gonna be that heavy.

Next thing to clean up the axle and mounting a beam to the rear of the trailer so that the frame is rocksolid. I removed the last 50cm of the end of the trailer because i don't need that length behing the wheel to the back.

Building the floor was the easiest job. Using 9mm betonplex (multiplex with a thick watertight layer) at the bottomside.

used the Wyoming Woody plans and redesigned them in Illustrator and let the print full size. Glued that on 9mm multiplex to make the outer and inner template.
Today the windows arrived from Germany, 250 x 500 mm, safetyglass and only 99 euro

50 Euro! That's 81 Australian dollars.

And just about perfect for the job.
What a bargain.

Nice progress. I was surprised the trailer did not have a rear cross member but you solved that in short order.

You have made a good start....

May I suggest that you reduce the width of the framing on
the sides and front and back to help reduce weight. Also,
I found it useful to take and keep pictures of framing and
blocking with measurements as I built.

Another step further in the construction process. The supports placed at the rear and a bracket for the spare wheel under the rear of the floor. Then the first sidewall roughly sawn with use of the template, now we can start routing.

Jan & Willem, looks like it's a good start on the trailer. I like the shape. Trailer frame looks strong enough & workmanship is nicely done. Try to keep as much weight down as possible, mine weighs in at 770KG & I over-built a fair amount of it, so 1000 should be possible. Just keep track of weight as you go & watch the balance.

What are you using for a tow vehicle? I will follow your build on this one!

A tip from my experience. Lots of sanding before routing as it will duplicate every little bump in the original.

Hi Jan Willem, looks like a nice build! I built a woody quite similar 2 years ago, hugely enjoyed the process. Check out my buildjournal for the pictures. Let me know if you have any questions!

Groet,

Worked on the first wall today. Routing is easy from the template. Long part at bottom is 6 mm deep and fits at the side of the floor when putting together.

Found the hard to find hurricane hinge in Belgium, male and female part, 170cm long for € 68. (https://www.noyens.be/webshop/index.php/webwinkel/aluminium-profielen/01-010-0001-detail

Tonight glued the first innerwall of 4mm multiplex to the main wall (18mm). And load about 450 kilogram of stones on it. Ready for today. tomorrow routing and finish the other wall before assembly to the floor this weekend.

first use the router to mill the shelves of the cupboards and kitchen into the walls so that it can later be supported by them. Both sides had to be exactly the same so a precise job. Then placed the first wall and glued and screwed. the other wall is only screwed because the cupboards still have to come in between. Now get started with the cabinets.
