Canned Ham Plans?

Postby BrandonWhite » Wed Feb 06, 2013 8:37 pm

Hello builders, I would like to build a small canned ham travel trailer. Does anyone know where I can buy updated and detailed plans? I really don't know where to start. I joined this site back in 08 with plans to build a TD but life happened so now I'm back LOL!

I would like for it to be big enough for two adults. Thanks for any info you might have. I really have a canned ham addiction.

There are a few designs in the vintage plans under the design resources tab above. Also, check this out : viewtopic.php?f=18&t=53723
He has built several. They are well thought out.

Welcome back, Brandon
Have you considered buying an old canned ham off of craigslist and then restoring/rebuilding it? That way you get the windows, door, hatches and hardware, frame etc, to get you started. I've got one waiting in the wings for a rebuild... picked it up for $300. They're still out there but getting harder to find as more people are getting interested in them. Good luck with whatever you decide, and keep us posted (don't wait another 5 years).

Hi Brandon,

The advantage of buying a bad canned ham ist to get all the hardware plus a chassis incl. title for small money.
I bought my 1977 Eriba Troll for 350 Euros (without title) and needed 250 more to get it back on the road including new tires.
One new window costs more than the whole used trailer and often you can save the body and improve/replace only the furniture.
Not to buy stove and heater and fridge are another 500 dollars you could possibly save.

But if you have a clear plan, how your new trailer should be and nobody had built anything similar til now - it's worth to start from zero !

I'd agree with the last poster....buy up a parts trailer and strip it. Depending on what your budget is, you can get something that may only take some minor restoration, but you are going to pay for it, or get one to scrape and part out. Then you can design your own floor plan and profile. I've cloned a Scotty, but this go around, I'm going completely scratch and only using the parts I was able to salvage from the donor trailer. There is no right or wrong on your design, if it works for you, go for it. Regardless of the design, most of them had the same type construction, just a different shape. Doug

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. I may consider buying an older one and going this route.
