What size regulator for suburban 6 gal water heater?

Postby gisclair615 » Sun Apr 26, 2015 8:36 am

I'm in the process of finishing up my 6x12 toy hauler build. I installed a 6 gal suburban water heater. All the instruction say it to hook up a 3/8 LP line to the 3/8 fitting on water heater. Anyone know what size regulator to use? The water heater is 12,000 btu. Thanks

Regulators have a BTU rating also...

IF you are using a stove or other propane devices also, get regulator that is more BTU capacity than cumulative value of all devices....

Examples of BTU ratings of regulators can be found here (for example CAMCO 59313)... You can go bigger in BTU capacity of regulator but not smaller and device(s) will only draw what it needs....

Thanks for the help. I did find a camco low pressure regulator with 3/8 hose that's rates for 70000btu. Would that be to high to use for my 12,000btu water heater? I figure it should be good but I'm new to LP and not sure if that's what I need for it to work correctly.

A propane regulator can never be too large or have too high a capacity although it might be a slight waste of a little money going too large. . Too small would be no good at all.

I ended up with a Camco http://www.amazon.com/Camco-59333-Horizontal-Propane-Regulator/dp/B0024E6TX2/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt two stage regulator which is supposed to provide a more even flow. We have a six gallon water heater, three burner cook top and gas grill all of which can be on.

AT 160,000, I am guessing it will cover my needs also. So I am adding it to my Amazon "cart" now. Should push the "order" button shortly. Thanks.
