Pex questions

Postby flboy » Mon Jul 25, 2016 11:45 am

I have some plumbing questions and hoping someone can advise. I am going to use Pex tubing to plumb My CTC conversion and my thought is to have a ½” Coldwater and Hotwater Main then will have reduction T’s to tap off where needed to 3/8 in into faucets, etc.. I have seen manifolds used where all the tubes are “homerun”, but I’d rather not do that unless very necessary. Questions:

1) Is ½ too big. If so what size. I am not at home and don’t know what the standard RV pump would need.

2) Are reductions needed at the (“T”) tap points to maintain pressure? I believe the faucets and etc. reduce internally.

3) Depending on answers for #1 and #2, Could 3/8” be used throughout?

Thank you in advance. I can use the advice. I have no problems connecting things up, but not being a plumber, I am not sure on these things and want a professional installation with good pressure.

I have posted this question in my CTC build thread also but posting here also in case other non CTC builders never look there or read there. Thanks!

Standard size for water pumps in mobile food carts and trailers are 1/2 inch inlets and outlets. I believe it is the same for the RV industry.

I have used 1/2 in pex all the way around. I had the opposite problem this weekend. At my fitting from the street hose to my system, I used 1 in tubing with hose clamps for the transition. But the CG pressure was way too much and it blew the connector/hose apart. Luckily, I was right next too it when it blew and was able to rush to the CG facuet to shut off the hose.

I will now hard plumb it by replacing the 1 in aberration with 1/2 Pex and crimp clamps. And I will always use a street pressure valve along with a shut off right at the trailer.

Now as far as 1/2" goes with a 12v pump, all I can add is that the pressure is quite high, so I do not believe that the tees will not be an issue.

So I will be good just using 1/2 tubing as a main and then "T" off as needed for faucets, toilet, etc. ? That will it very convenient. Thanks.

This just an example or two of my tees.

Don't let the tangle of a mess confuse you. This is an old photo where I was playing with radiant tubing heat (works by the way).

Wow... that's a lot of connections!
Thanks all for the feedback. I am going 100% 1/2 Pex. Bought the materiel at Lowes. I ended up just buying the White Pex tubing. 100' (way more than I need) was $27 and change. They only see 100 feet rolls. I wanted to use blue and red, but I did't want to buy 200ft. I'll just used some colored electrical tape in areas where it may be confusing. I have Red and Blue, so I will mark them at the connections.

I went with the 1/2" Pex as you guys suggested. I have to say, this stuff is very easy to work with. I haven't pressurized the system yet, so we'll see how well I did then. :-)
