Retractable would make a great foamie

This also appeared in General Discussion. I think it would be a really cool foamie:

I don't think a foamie would require an electric roof, some prop rods would probably work just fine.

Yeah but that would require FG work and PPE.

Alaskan camper

How about a simple shape, a box, on a trailer instead of a truck?

Much more aerodynamic with a lowered top and could be built as a standy.

I designed a foamie like the Alto, my thread is on the foamie section somewhere ;) I love the idea of a low profile when towing so less wind drag then when parked you lift up the back and instant standie. My design was 4' high inside when down, and 12' long. The plan called for 'canvass' sides to fill the gap when it becomes a standie. The thin beige rectangles represent beds. the front has a double bed and the back a couch that flip ups into a bed. so it would sleep 4. The area from the edge of the double bed to the back is a minimum of 6'-2" inside height when standing. Thanks for jogging my memory I had asked about building under 1000lb. I think maybe this could? :worship: and at 4 ' high and rounded front and tapered to the back it would be aerodynamic so very little wind drag.

I like the straight up approach too, just wonder about the mechanism and the weight it would add, A clamshell design is a simple hinge at the front then a couple of rods to hold it up, very little added weight.

Check out the Army Goose build. Not canvas sides, but might give you some ideas. His came in 1640lbs fully loaded.

climb inside, lift it up with your hands and put a 6.5 foot broomstick in each corner.

Thanks George!

The wood inside would add a lot of weight. Hmmmm maybe I can build one at around 100 or 1200lbs!!!!

Can you post a link add/or add pictures to your gallery?

I like your clam shell drawing & design, it is somewhat similar in concept to my Tip Top Tear Drop

Mine does not have the fancy curves (there are some technical reasons why), but it is built (2x) with over 12K miles of road experience and we love it. I expect to be adding some notes in the near future regarding a foam version of the top tier.

The plan called for 'canvass' sides to fill the gap when it becomes a standie.

I know a lot of people have used fabric sides with a solid state roof, but my preference is for exactly the opposite. Why? -- because I don’t need to fold any wet fabric and worry about exposing the bed to it (or rain during erection and closing). Fabric works just fine for the roof because it is only lowered (not folded and stored) during travel. In fact, travel serves to 'dry the fabric'. The down side is your design must accommodate the vertical height of the upper tier sides.

When you going to start building??
