JMHO, the Latex is easier to use , easier to repair and perhaps more foam “safe” .... Save the oil based for the wooden Trailers ...

'Just wondering if adding a mildew-cide additive to the exterior paint
would be a good idea ? If you live in a Humid, or Hot and Humid, area
it might be worthwhile.
If you have a house - you have a hobby.

As long as the mildewcide doesn't eat foam I see no harm in doing it, in fact, I'd probably recommend it.

With some help from my wife and son in law, we got most of the first coat of paint on.
I tested the paint directly on the foam with no ill effect. Based on that and the fact that I had a good coat of Gripper for a base, I used the Oil based Porch and Floor paint.
I think it will provide a more durable finish. It went on well, and I think the second coat will completely fill in the canvas weave. Here's a teaser picture , but I haven't finished the edges of the silver yet.

Tac, as I can recall (which is not much ) you’re the first one to use an oil based finish over canvas on a Foamie ... Seems logical it would hold up , because it’s been used on so many canvas covered canoes in the past ... Just be aware , that you cannot really put a Latex product over the oil based anymore ... Oil over latex is OK , but the reverse will eventually lift and peel ... Just sayin’ ...

It is looking GOOD !!! 8) :D The silver (Al paint) is such a “vintage “ thing ... 8) 8) 8)

Thanks Doc.
I didn't realize that, but it shouldn't need painted again for a loooong time !
I still have to do the second coat, and second color.
The foam wasn't very smooth underneath. On the back side side canvas had been applied and removed. I should have sanded more, but I burned up my 1/4 sheet sander and decided to move on to the next step.
The gloss does tend to highlight defects vs hide them.... I'm hoping adding the second color will detract from that.

The best way to lessen the foamie' surface defects is to stand further away .... We like to view ours from at least 50’ feet away ( a “fifty -footer” ) ...
Trust me !!! No one will ever complain about your canvas texture.... True !!! ;)

I got a second coat on the silver today. I'm still not quite done, but it's coming along...

I agree with GPW, don't stand too close and it looks great i went with fiberglass and while i don't regret my decision, there are a few things to know. getting fiberglass to look great takes lots of work. the texture of canvas really looks great once finished. For all the time I spent worrying about the look of canvas, I like it a lot where I did use it

my tear is ply but covered with painted canvas, I really like the texture. Also find it is very tough, tying things on the roof and towing over long distances doesn't wear into the surface at all, unlike just painted wood.
