Yea, I've been thinking about that. I think the blue foam should come out a bit farther, so that it touches a foam seal when the hatch is closed.

Yes, there's more than one way to add that gap... I like cutting a rabbet if one has a table saw.

With 2" foam you could notch the inside foam before gluing on and leaving out the wood. Or use 3/4 foam board spacer.
I figure 2 latches, like I have on my current foamie (The Mad Dash) I never took a close up photo, but I do have this one handy...
