Craze ideal. Have the hatch open down and slide in. It would be come the counter top and lid over the storage area. One could have a small flap(door) on the top out side the hatch as a drip edge.

KenW, Hmmmmm? Interesting idea if I’m seeing it correctly ... How about a quick sketch of that idea ....???

I am at work right now. So the hatch would not have hinges but a inside flange to hold it in place when closed. When open it would slide in a slot (like a built in cutting board).
Come to think about it. The slide in would not work the door seal flange would get in the way.

Back to the drawing board .... it did sound like a good idea though !!!

Its somewhat like my suggestion. Make swing out doors, but put them on "lift off" hinges. Then you can lift off the swing out doors, and turn them into a counter top/ table what ever...

Okay, I had some time to play tonight... so here is what I was thinking...

I basically drew a line 6" from the edge of the back and cut it off using a skill saw... Then I connected that piece with a hinge on the top... Then I glued some 3/4" wood on the inside for a spacer, and then I glued some blue foam to the wood, and let it stick out a couple inches. I'll put a gutter in the top piece.

So if water gets in it runs down the gutter, around the sides, and out the bottom.





I'm still trying to keep this as simple as possible. Did I achieve my mission?

looks like a strategist at work. I wonder if there a van rear gasket that you could get from peel a part. To add more for dust

Mike, that's what I see as best. Mine is vertical, but with the lip an angle like that is fine. With the plastic hinge you have no leak issues through the hinge, bur really any hinge will work with this inside lip design.
For latches, I have two draw latches I removed from the pop up I tore down. KISS

With 2" foam you could notch the inside foam before gluing on and leaving out the wood. Or use 3/4 foam board spacer.

What about the possibility of water being forced in sideways whilst being underway in the rain ( @ 85 mph) ... Still need a positive GASKET of some kind ... rubber seal ? ... trained Seal ... ???

Yea, I've been thinking about that. I think the blue foam should come out a bit farther, so that it touches a foam seal when the hatch is closed.

Yes, there's more than one way to add that gap... I like cutting a rabbet if one has a table saw.

I figure 2 latches, like I have on my current foamie (The Mad Dash) I never took a close up photo, but I do have this one handy...
