Has anyone ever skinned a foamie with old newspaper / paper?

I too have thought of paper mache or paper mache over a cardboard core. Paper mache can be waterproofed.
I think to get it thick enough to be structurally ok on it's own would get heavy. So maybe cardboard core or something with just a smoothing layer?
