Gripper beading a TB II layer on top sounds about right. It's surface is real slick and the paint itself is pretty resistant to sanding. George (ghcoe) had the great idea of putting Gripper on raw foam as an indicator of when you are sanding down into the foam. But I will now sand & perforate (h/t rowerwet) all foam surfaces to avoid bubbles. Only takes a couple of minutes.

You really should sand all slick surfaces before you put anything on top anyway and I have also gotten into the habit of cleaning slick surfaces like flashing with alcohol to remove any oils contamination.

Well, here's the final results. They all look good, and I think any one of the finishes would do well to protect the foam and wood underneath...

Gripper on the left, garage floor paint on the right

Jack, your garage needs more dirt and some interesting bugs running around to distract you -- like mine :R :R :R

You have these around there:

Mike, looks like the Gripper on top fills the fabric weave the most of all those but hard to be sure with those pix. Which looks best filled to you ?

The garage floor paint looked the best to me. But
I'm going to give it another coat, and try rolling it on.

Nice work Jack, and very well presented. :applause:

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks, guys. The garage is all cleaned up for the pictures. But most of the time it's got a lot more going on in it.

That bug looks like you could put a collar on it and make it a pet. :)

Mike...

Thanks for doing this testing. Is the garage floor paint water based?

The next question is which one sands to a smooth finish. I know gripper is a primer and is formulated to be sanded and to have a top coat of paint. So far it holds up really well. so let us know your results.

Mike are you going to CRA?

TB II is best for glueing the fabric on after that paint works best. One guy building foam boats thickens his water based paint with cabosil (micro balloons) to make smooth boaty finishes over fiberglass cloth.
Search YouTube for dave Lucas foam kayak.
He claims one coat smoothing.
The TB II foam to fabric bond being best for repairability using heat.

Gentlemen, take care using micro balloons ... It was reported the ultra light substance floats through the air and is not good to inhale ... Just opening the jar send particles into the air ...

Aww shucks, doing a build generates all kinds of dust, GPW, pretty hard to avoid. I wear a mask when doing this but ...

I sanded the 3 samples... They all sanded nice and smooth. The dark gray shows best what happens to the paint after you've sanded. It certainly needs another coat!

Mike , unfortunately , the only old school way we know to a really smooth finish is by filling the imperfections and block-sanding with progressively lighter grits till you get it as smooth as you want ... Much as you’d finish a car, furniture, or even a wall ...
