KC,
I like the flush-mounted plates. We must have the same level of OCD. I originally was going to surface mount them too...but the thought ate at me and wouldn't leave my mind until I made changes. Jigs and fixtures take time but not using them and screwing up the workpiece takes even more time to correct.
Take care,
Tom

is it 'poking the bear' if I point out your screws aren't all aligned to the same direction? (hey, CDO is real).

seriously, I am SO happy to see you nearing the 'campable' stage, and every detail you fix to your level of ability gets you that much closer. Congrats, it looks amazing!

Nothing picture worthy this evening.

In prep for sealing the window rough openings I did a quick scuff of the poly that had spilled over from finishing the inner door skins. I found a section of the inner skin that wasn’t bonded to the door frame well during the original glue up. I think I was aware of this previously but figured installing the window would clamp it together, but now I wanted to fix it before moving forward; so I drizzled some TB2 down in the gap, dragged it down in there with the long razor knife, and clamped it together with the green spring clamps.

Anyway, while that was kicking off I mixed up a single pump batch of the fast epoxy and thinned it by about 10-15/ct with acetone. Despite the 90 deg heat, at the upper end of the fast hardener range, I didn’t feel like cleaning the pump to switch back to the slow… figuring it would be fine for small batches that go on quickly. I thinned the epoxy mostly because I didn’t want to build up too much thickness in sealing the latch plate mortises, but it would also help slow down the kick. Essentially this made a home brew CPES. The single pump batch was the perfect amount for a first coat on the window RO and recess, the latch mortise, and one of the latch ROs that wasn’t sealed during FG skinning.

Once that was done I sat in front of the fan for a while until the glue up on the other door was stable enough to remove the clamps. I gave that RO a quick scuff, mixed up another batch of thin and laid that on. The second door latch RO had already been sealed so I had just enough left over to do the last couple of clearance/marker light wire pockets that I hadn’t gotten to yet.

And that was it.

The weather is supposed to be a lot dryer and a little cooler for the next couple of days, so maybe I’ll be a little more productive on the bodywork… maybe.

Oh h e double hockey sticks no!

I empathize with CDO sufferers.. My Dad is one and he drives me nuts & vice versa as I'm a solid TLAR person.

Don't worry, these are just test fits! LOL    :D Besides, I think I lost a few screws when I decided to go down this home built path (bah-dump-bump).

Thanks Ned, I really appreciate you and all who keep cheering me on with generous support. It really is starting to feel like the home stretch, but there are still many hours left to get the remaining tasks done.

Bonnie, glad to be of service. :D

The other day when I washed amine off of the door RO sealer coats some of the water seeped underneath and got the rosin paper wet. One door wasn’t so bad so I just stood it up in front of the fan and it dried pretty quickly. The other was pretty well saturated and I was concerned about having the wet in contact with the poly finish on the inner door skin, or the paper adhering when it dried again; so I peeled that part of the rosin paper off.
Image

Curious about what would happen when I eventually peel the first strip of blue tape off of the edge, and whether it will lift a ton of poly after having been on there for so long, I went ahead and peeled some of it back. Since I have had just as much poly fail when using the hair dryer to gently soften the tape’s glue as I have when I didn’t bother, I thought maybe the heat was part of the problem… maybe. Anyway, it took some effort and was hard on the fingernails (due to the epoxy that had butted up to the edge), but none of the poly lifted, so I was happy that I might not have to sand, refinish, or cheat and use trim paint around the perimeter (although I kind of like that idea and may do it anyway). It was nice to see what I have been protecting for so long still in good shape. But I still have a lot of handling and more operations to do, so I pieced some small strips of rosin paper together and tapped it back up.

Here you can see how by holding the original tape back a smidgen the epoxy from the door edge glass wrapped up onto the finished face.

Tonight, despite the 90 deg temp and 50/ct humidity, I put about an hour in skim coating the door glass weave with 410 thickened epoxy.

There will likely be some areas that need touch-up, as I do not have an even hand at this yet. I seem to create as many drag marks with the squeegee as I try to remove others, but toward the end I think I started to develop a technique that will work well enough.

I’ll probably do the edges in a few different operations, or maybe try going straight to some high build primer. Just muddling my way through this.
Bodywork.
