But what did he use to make it waterproof?

Fiberglass cloth and epoxy would do it, but would get costly.

Yes, I know... but I really wanted to know about this...

Gafni wrote: Once the shape has been formed and cut, the cardboard is treated with a secret concoction made of organic materials to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with lacquer paint for appearance.

In testing the durability of the treated cardboard, Gafni said he immersed a cross-section in a water tank for several months and it retained all its hardened characteristics.

During Viet Nam, and up until it was replaced by the much heavier cargo=container based DEPMEDS the Army used what were called MUST shelters, basically a box made out of honeycomb cardboard covered with a very thin aluminum sheeting. The boxes were expandable, with the long sides being capable of folding up to form a roof, an inner wall dropped down to form a floor, with walls then the walls would fold out and latch the floor and roof together. The structure was fairly light, and insulating. I would love to have one or its successor for a cabin or workshop. The hexcomb looks just like what was inside the walls (did I say the covering was THIN aluminum). The stuff was actually pretty sturdy, we had laboratories, x-ray, operating rooms, and others all out of the same type of box. Some would open on one side and the ends, others would have both sides fold out. I thought about making an equivalent using cardboard and covering with 1/8" ply.

These aren't cardboard but the same 'honeycomb' principle.
I wonder if the inventor got his idea from hollow core doors
or the Japanese fusuma sliding doors/panels that are made
of a thin wood member grid with skins on both sides.

I came across another link for the Cardboard Bicycle
on Gizmag tonight. It has additional info on it:

Can you find an example of one of these on the web? I've looked and I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks,

Maybe this idea could be extrapolated out to a TD?
or do it with a foam with some flexibility as well and then
fiberglass the final assembly.

P.S. 11-05-12 The 'cardboard' used for this is actually one of
a paper honeycomb core, not corrugated.

I can only conclude from all of this that a thicker , Non-corrugated cardboard product attached to Foam as in a SIP definitely is the way to go ... JMHO
The corrugated board is merely folded Kraft paper , with mostly air inside ... :o the non-corrugated is like paper , but Thick Strong paper ... makes a good strong skin , and unlike plywood , it Can be completely saturated with a waterproofer rendering it , essentially a “resin” impregnated sheet ... You could canvas over that , Glass it , or just paint over it and that’s that ... Corrugated trailers ? Gotta’ be like camping in an appliance box ... ...

Granted , appliance boxes were FUN as a kid , but they didn’t last that long ...
Simple test .... take a piece of corrugated cardboard and pull on it , tear it .... try the same with a piece of non corrugated cardboard the same thickness... See which is Stronger ...
Wood ,plywood , paper , cardboard , canvas....it’s all the same fibers (cellulose plant fibers ) ... made differently ... There’s the difference .... remember , twice as thick is 8 times as strong !!! ;) We DO want Strong huh ?
Corrugated cardboard (waterproofed) would make a good “temporary” camper , but might suffer too much abuse (get all beat up) in the long run with normal camping use ... JMHO

If there’s any doubt , do a simple test ... (more testing :o ) Make up some samples of each , and give em’ the stress test ... Prove it to yourself ... ;)

Consider this .... when you put a dent in foam (hammer? ) the foam compresses and becomes denser and resistant to the compressing force ... When you hit cardboard, the inner paper spacer just collapses and offers no further resistance to the dent ... :o
Swear I’ve had some small dings that puffed themselves back up when the Foamie trailer was sitting in the hot summer Sun ... really !!! 8) Just canvas over Foam ....

All great points! Maybe someone needs to build a 'fort' and see how it holds up once waterproofed? Heck, if someone had kids they could build several with different waterproofing on each one, and let the kids have at them to test durability!
