the foamie (build journal)

Postby eaglesdare » Mon Apr 18, 2011 7:36 am

here is the thread that started it all
http://tnttt.com/viewto ... sc&start=0`

this a long thread and building the building doesn't start til around page 24. so it was decided that a separate build journal be done. i also want to say this was not my idea, thanks goes to that thread and gpw!

since all the write ups are on that thread i am just going to add some pics here.
this was hubby starting the frame inside.
Image

but it got too big and too heavy so out it went.

i know it has been recommended to add a tongue extention. we will, but haven't gotten to that part yet.

hubby has the floor cut out. it looks bowed and warped here already, but it was not bolted down yet. it really is flat.
Image

we are pretty close to the tire
Image

the profile. in this pic there is a weird bump at the top, it will be gone when done. although in the finished product there still seems to be a weird shape to the top.
Image

the foam dust begins
Image

trying to get both sides to match
Image

i used a steak knife and a hand saw to cut. and sand paper grit number 60 works great.

I built an all fiberglass airplane using foam as the meat in the sandwich
the foam only provided shape the bi-direction fiberglass provided the strength it turned out very strong and light weight.

keep the pictures coming

more foam had to be bought
Image
this is how they drove it home

the foam had to be scored to take the bend on the roof. the sides are 2" think insulated foam. the roof is 1" insulated foam. bought from lowes
Image

wood spars had to be put in, we tried using foam ones, but they were not strong enough. i wonder if you took more time and used foam spars covered with the canvas if that would make the strong enough? we did not have the time, so we did not test that.
Image

the roof starts
Image

bending it

`
we glued and screwed to the spars

in that last pic above you can see the hatch, right there is a bunk bed. also that flat piece of wood flips up and out for a counter and under counter storage.

yes, lots of commented about canoes and airplanes. but also most have said they used the fiblerglass. this was something we wanted to stay away from. i wanted easy, and non toxic. that original link to the thread on the first post was exactly what i was looking for.

i have lots of foam left over though, so my mind is working on another project with this concept.

the pics will continue till i run out. i did not take that many more. :o

oh wow, thanks so much. but don't follow too close. read some of the follow ups. take heed. don't make the same mistakes, well there are no mistakes. but things i would have done differently.

i saw you posted over there, i wasn't sure what you meant. i put in this first post a link from the beginning of the thrifty alternatives thread. that thread needs to have the credit. gpw started the idea.
but it was getting pretty long and the building doesn't start til page 24.

good luck on yours and i can't wait to see your pics. it really is an easy build. but take your time.

:applause:  :applause: Very nice job on your teardrop Eagle!

(BTW, what is your real first name?) Thank you for documenting your unique and innovative build.

Even though the weather didn't fully cooperate, I know y'all must have had a wonderful time on your first outing.

Enjoy your teardrop and take care,
Tom
