So GeeP-dub, can you give us a little tutorial on what the different types of canvas mean and why we would choose one over the other?

You have said before that artist canvas is thinner, and IIRC a finer weave, but what is Duck vs canvas vs single fill vs double fill? Any idea?

I do know that canvas is a looser weave and is "rougher" thread than Duck. Both are cotton and both are suitable for our purpose. now it does come in different weights and 7 oz to 12 oz is great for our purpose. of course the heavier the weight the longer it takes for the cloth and fibers (thread) to get truly immersed, coated or soaked in paint or TBII Duck is somewhat more of a finished canvas and tighter weave and suitable for making drapes, aprons and other things whereas canvas is more for a rougher Tarp, car covering etc. Both 100% cotton but you often find duck is softer and the threads are more finely processed. My experience comes from sewing where GPW s comes from painting canvas. anyway that is my take on it and my experience.

Mary , the secret of permeating the canvas discussed a while back , was to thin the T2 ... or whatever you were using ...
There are so many styles of canvas available , you just need to find the kind You like ... Preferably I’d like to use a good Linen canvas ...twice as strong as cotton , more durable , and Much more expensive ... I used Linen on my little Foamie , because I had it already ... (left over from “painting” ) Still in perfect shape after all this time outside ...

KC , I believe the single weave is a 1/1 thread ratio where as the double weave is 2/1.... 2/1 having more thread is “heavier" , more dense ... the term seems to vary from manufacturers, so is really not dependable ... Visual inspection is the only way to find what you want ...

I was at Home Depot and noticed that they have canvas drop cloths there. The prices and quality seemed pretty good. I could not feel any seams in the packages besides the edging. They came in 8oz. and 12oz. cloths.

The time has come to actually BUY some canvas ... The wife wants “Nice” , so we’re going to purchase a “nice" canvas for the skin .... I keep looking at that Allens #8 ... nice Heavy canvas ... should make a good skin ... a bit pricy , but for “she who must not be named” , it’s just a pittance... more to come ... soon we hope ...

If anybody’s found a better selection of canvas (or better price) please let me know ...

Just in case they've not been mentioned before, Seattle Fabric has canvas & duck cloth. You can get it in a variety of widths. The #10 duck goes up to 120" wide. It's not the cheapest but is at least an option if trying to avoid seams.

Figuring we’ll need ~ 20 yds for the Foam Stream (that should give a little extra...just in case (the math) .... @ 7.95 /yd. = $160.00 plus shipping

Just made my order from Big Duck ... 20 yds X 60” = $181.25 (including shipping ) ... not bad eh ? should be here in time the sanding’s done ... Schmaybe' ? ... It looks like rain...
