RE: Foam Floor

Hi all Foamlings,

Here is a web site for the Sing Homes Co. that makes foam & Plywood
"honeycombs". [Should really be called "grids" since the divisions are
square, not hexagonal - - but thats a quibble I guess, probably.]

http://www.superhoneycomb.com/

They have the standard panel size of 4x8, but other sizes are available,
and they have various thicknesses available as well.

Anyway it is interesting to look through and can give ideas/inspiration.
For floors I think it's a good idea. A totally foam constructed trailer body
may not be the most efficient or strongest in certain areas. Instead
of trying for a total "orthodoxy" of all foam or nothing, lets combine other
materials with the foam in ways that enhance the entire build and provides
better strength or performance and safety. The majority of the material
will still be foam, with its' benefits. Let's take advantage of the benefits
the other materials can add to the build.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Mez, I don't think it was ever the intention to make the trailers ALL Foam , just Mostly Foam ... to replace those heavy plywood bits prone to ROT and de-lamination, thus eliminating a Lot of maintenance and worry, and much of the weight ... Any wood (structural) should be quite safe "encapsulated" inside the structure.. Maybe we should call all of them Hybrid Foamies , combining the best elements of wood and foam .. Some places , wood just does a Better job ... but it's Heavy and we Must Protect it ...
The canvas skin is just the way the Ancient Ones who built trailers , did it ... which today equates to "poor man's Fiberglass"... Easy to work/apply ... non toxic...

It's the Smart combination of all these materials (or more) that will produce a strong and durable trailer, with less weight (easier to tow, carry more of Your stuff) and super insulation .... for far less coin than a traditionally built trailer ...

exactly what gpw has said. there was never any intentions of a fully foam build. some wood has always been mentioned in various support areas. this is where i believe everyone is going to have to try/test/experiement for themselves.

it will be interesting to see where/how everyone does their own foamie/hybrid.

although, on my second build, i am going to attempt less wood than the first. more foam even if i double up on it.

now the lottery has to pay off, or the money has to grow back on the trees before i can do anything else. hubby has cut me off.

I must mention that the wood used should be of a more ROT resistant nature... just as an added precaution ... You know , a well built Foamie (hybrid) , can last Many years ... and not too much trouble either ... just the usual bearing care , and an occasional coat of paint ... Kept in a Garage , it could last indefinitely ... :o

Eagle , time for a "Bake Sale" !!!! Cupcakes...

I was wondering if anybody has tried using those foam core steel utility doors for the floor in the sleeping area? I was at one of the big box store in the area and they had a few of them for sale in their scratch and dent section. The nice thing about it is they only wanted $5.00 each. I know there plenty tuff cuz I've made work benches out of them in the past. They're not that heavy and the seams could be leveled out with bondo or something like that. Where its bolted to the frame it could be dimpled and covered with bondo. The floor area would then be ready for whatever type of covering you desired. The galley area could be built as a freestanding unit and slid in place. bolted down and attached to the sidewalls.

i have never tried it, but i don't see why they would not work. i have thought about those core hollow doors.

i am sure others will speak more technically about them.

 cupcake sale? always wanted a bakery, but too many others out there that are "pretty" i can do just about anything, however, not always attractive. hehehe

How about two panels joined by a spline, the joint running down the line where the wall meets the floor, the spline giving a hardpoint that can be screwed the the floor.

RE: Using Foam Filled Steel Doors

Postby mezmo » Sun May 29, 2011 12:59 am

Hi Jerry & Molly,

Check out forum member eatatjoz's build "The Stumble Inn".

http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=30779

Very ingenious and thrifty. Just about everything was something
reused or re-purposed. I think he said somewhere in it he only spent
a coupe hundred or so dollars on it out of pocket.

He used steel foam filled garage door panels that were rejects or
excess or slightly damaged somehow.

There is also another build somewhere on the forum where they are
utilizing the cutouts from steel foam filled French doors for the same
purpose. They consider them a SIPs of sorts.

Your idea for the foam filled steel utility doors is exactly the same
premise. Hard to beat the price you said they had on them too.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Just started to look at their website...how about a roadtrip to WA to pick up some material?

This product looks really interesting at first glance, even for general teardrop construction. Any sources for similar panels available in our neck of the woods?
