I'm not sure how well this will work with canvas/glue (although I can't see why not), but one common way to get hardpoints in composite foam laminates is to drill a hole where the hardpoint is desired into one layer of the skin, but not all the way through and out the other layer. Then, create a cavity by removing the foam between the skins - a bent coat hanger in an electric drill is one way, and use a shopvac to suck out the pulverized foam bits. Mix up a slurry of epoxy and milled fiberglass and fill the cavity. Not something that would be practical for a full-length piano hinge, however.
