Yep , natural inclination seems to be to clench , or tense right up. I honestly didn't have time to do more than stand on the brakes & hope it only collected two cars.

Almost had the same thing happen to me in LA last weekend. Luckily for the POS in a Prius that I was able to stop about 1 inch from his bumper.. I was driving my F250 and pulling a UHaul trailer. I would have destroyed that idiot! :x :x Glad to hear you're OK. I hope they buy your total out at a decent price. I've gotten screwed on that end of the deal before...

Ned sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully you will end up with a better tow vehicle!

Thanks Mary!
The aveo was strictly my work car, the new car will be about 80/20 work/family... I'm looking at either a Prius (going strictly for miles per gallon) OR for a TDI Jetta if I can find one ... scratch that, I think I just found the car I will be picking up early this coming week... 2002 Jetta TDI, right in my price range and at a good dealership specializing in vw/audi vehicles.

Sorry about that. Totaling out a new or new-ish car is just depressing. However, a VW TDI should make a more than suitable replacement. Is the Jetta you're looking at a sedan or a wagon. VW TDI wagons are always on my wishlist even though I've not had one yet.

the tdi was a sedan... but someone snatched it up on me. test drove another sedan, but it was just a 'bridge too far'...

I'm defaulting to a prius... and the escape hybrid will have to be the tow vehicle... and/or my son's F150 (if he keeps it...).

My '02 Prius made it to 260k miles on odo before it was totaled out. It was still on the original battery pack and still performed as it did when it was young with the exception of mpg's which had dropped from an average of 50 to 48 mpg combined city+hwy. My sister's '04 Prius is still going strong with close to 200k miles. Both with original battery pack. Mine was only on it's second set of brake pads. Seriously! Though not tow vehicles, for sure, Prius' (Prii?) are the best commuter vehicles I know of for people who consistently drive a lot of miles. Be warned though that these cars are a lot like Subaru's in the way my mechanic described best. "Those little cars almost never have a problem but when you do have a problem you really have a problem." However, like my Subaru, even when you add in the once every 4 years insanely expensive repair the Prius still worked out to be one of the cheapest overall cars I've ever had.

With my job, I'm doing 2-300 miles a Day... (on the days that I work...) so 40+mpg is going to be a welcome change from 25-27mpg

one of my co-workers has an 05 prius which he is on his second gas engine (left the synergy drive alone, just put a new motor on it)... and he has 450,000 miles on it

I didn't think the escape hybrid had a tow ability, do tell. 8)

I drive a 2001 Jetta TDI. It's got about 305000 miles on it I bought it new. I love it. I tow with it. I haven't towed my foamy as it isn't done yet. But I have towed a sailboat at about 800lbs, and a utility trailer with loads between 50 and 500lbs. I can tell when something is back there. But it does a really nice job most of the time. It's about like having a couple adults ride along.

I'm guessing the Nookery weighs about 400. That would be a lot of ballast I could add.
