I really can not tell how deep the damage is. You said it does not go through? If that is the case the foam is probably compressed which means if you fill it, it could push back up and leave a bump in the heat.

I had to repair a section on my battery box where my chickens pecked through the foam before I got it covered with canvas. I did not want to use that much filler so I took a steak knife and cut out a square that included most of the damage. I then put another piece of foam behind the cut out and traced the cutout onto the other piece of foam. I then cut out the new piece and glued it into the hole with caulk.

I think you could do the same thing and then before gluing it in place lay up the canvas on the foam repair panel before installing. Size the canvas out from the sides a inch or so, so that the canvas is larger than the repair panel. So now you should have a repair panel with canvas attached with the canvas sized a inch or so past the the panels edges. Now you can lay the repair panel into place without glue so that the overlaping canvas is now laying on top of the existing canvas. Now you can take a exacto/utility blade and cut through both layers of canvas, the overlaping sized repair panel canvas and the existing canvas around the damage area. The cut will now be exactly the same. Pull out the repair panel and pull off the canvas up to the cut line. It should pull off fairly easy. Now you can install the repair piece with caulk or Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive, be sure to apply TBII to the canvas area your new panel is replacing. Make sure you got a good amount of TBII alone the cut line where the canvas comes together. The TBII should give you a good bond along the cut line. I think this should give a pretty seamless repair that would be very hard to see once a new coat of paint was applied.

I just looked at it again, it was about at least 3/4" deep when I first pulled it out of the garage last week.
But it is easily less than 1/4 " now.
It's been in the shade, so I think if I let it sit in the sun, it might expand back out all the way !

Yes the sun will help with the healing. I had a shovel handle nearly punch through mine when I was working on it. By time I was ready to canvas the body, about a year later, it had healed to were I just needed a bit of light weight spackle to fill in around the edges. Good luck, George.

We’re getting ready to patch our Ant holes ( grrr !!!) , which will be a simple canvas patch … It’s that time of the year , nice weather making inspection and work a pleasant experience ...

Guys , i’m still trying to understand this self healing business , and logic would tell us that since foam is mostly Air captured in little plastic bubbles (Think popcorn ) , that as the bubbles are heated (though they be squashed) the air inside expands and inflates the bubble skin to the former larger size… How does that sound ???

Maybe try the wife’s hair dryer on it ??? …. not enought heat to melt the foam , but enough to simulate Summer temps … ( we measured between 120-140F on the old Foamie #1 camo paint job in the summer sun ( ~ 95 F air temp) ( light to black) … maybe speed up the healing process ???

The expansion rate of the foam (air bubbles within the structure of the foam) is the same reason we see our wood blocking and spars telegraphing through. When fairing my roof foam I would finish a section in the late evening and come back the next morning and it was no longer fair.

Stuff moves.

Try the damp rag and steam iron trick. Whatever doesn't spring back, or any rips in the foam that don't close up, hit them with some GS, GG or spackle. If using GS or GG, wait a good day or so to make sure it is truly done kicking, sand back and stick a canvas patch on.

Wear it proudly as a battle scar, and when in camp tell them it was a bear attack! ...alternately tell them it was struck by a frozen turkey.

Frozen Turkeys …. although this was proposed as a Foamie hazard long ago , we’ve been Lucky !!! …. No incidents reported … But given this Winter , the possibility of a Very Cold Turkey seemed a little more plausible ….

They don't even need to be frozen! LOL!
