Ned , sounds very doable ... Could be really Simple ... You have plans ?
Hint : if you’re going to cover anything inside , best do that before assembly when it’s easy to do ... then glue it all together. fabric and all ...

Sleep platform

Postby Ned B » Thu Jan 07, 2016 10:15 am

GPW I'm leaning strongly towards the classic generic Benroy plan that Mike published. Slightly modified for foam.

(I keep saving as I go... Pardon the changes to this reply)

I'll likely go with 4x8 HF chassis, single 4x8 sheet of plywood (exterior grade) 2" foam walls and ceiling. Twin XL (college dorm size) mattress, minimal 12v power & foamstream style 120 plug if I put any 120 AC in it at all .

The doors will have Wiley Windows , shop built of course. I'll probably do a rectangular door , the rounded corner in the generic plans bugs me.

I know the sock effect locks everything together, but I'll put wood cross bars across the top and a 1x2 skeleton inboard of the foam; Just two hoops on either end of the doors. The galley will be just a simple plywood case for structural purposes, & a place to put the battery.

The insides will be covered in sheets, exterior will receive duck cloth, tb2 thinned and oops paint to seal, plus a top color coat of plasti-dip (simply because I can).

Sounds Good to me Ned ... You can always square things off to make things easy on yourself .... Is Why we did Foamie #1 like that , all straight cuts , but sorta streamline ... Bonnie towed it half way across creation and said it towed like nothing was there.. Sometimes I think we have to compromise this love of those beautiful Rounded trailers with the practicalities of building ...

Oh I think the gentle curve of the Benroy is easy enough I'll see what the foam will do & if need be kerf cut the curve. Or I can use 1" or a sandwich of 2 1" pieces whichever...

Having a nice trip to the Shenandoah valley, went out & drove along skyline drive this afternoon:

There was a bit of slick conditions where the sun hadn't shone, but the speed limit is 35 anyway. I practiced teardrop time driving while several class B campers headed in the opposite direction.

If you rode the Skyline Drive all the way down to the end, you would end up in my former backyard, Waynesboro.
That pay as you go, scenic highway is very nice. And then immediately below that starts the Blue Ridge Drive, which I consider even nicer. And that is not because you do not pay to ride it.

Trust me, it is a lot less work, less material, and less time to kerf cut and bend thicker foam in one layer, than it is to try and adhere two layers of foam over a curve.

I can't say what it does for the insulation value, but for building, single layer is much easier to deal with.

According to the pdf the front curve is the tighter and it is only 19" radius , the back one is 48" radius... And I have a Tablesaw and or a jig and circular saw.

My front radius is 13-1/2 inches. Two layers of 3/4 thk was more work than I care to do again. If I had it to do over it would be a single layer of 1-1/2.

Making kerf cuts on a good table saw setup is easy.

I've got some foam already easy enough to do a test cut/bend. I'm several months from starting construction since wintah has reminded me that I do live in central New York... And even if I were to build here in Virginia my dad's shed isn't insulated or heated either.
And just to throw another wrench in, there's always a weekender which is zero curves.

Weekender’s pretty slick and can be longer than the 8’ trailer  8) ...

Making an angular foam box with no curves is really EASY ... Not as Pretty , but real simple , especially if you have a large Hot wire bow to make large gravity cuts at specific angles that mate right together ... even raked (inclined ) angles in trailers ( Weekender) is almost as good a streamlining as rounded .... almost ... and at our speeds , and the sizes of our trailers it’s not that big a deal ... When you get something that presents a large flat face to the wind , like a commercial trailer, then it does become a big deal , towing those large blunt nose trailers is like towing a parachute ... :frightened:

GPW, I'm trying much more towards super laegerra (sp?) class. I stopped in at my local hardware & lumber shop today, and they're going to quote me for both 3/4" and 1/2" external grade plywood for the floor (choosing one or the other) plus a sheet of 1/2" AC grade ply for the galley.

As for the weekender that is definitely my 2nd choice. I think ken had it right with his suggestion of the PIco. I'm going to find middle ground somewhere though, shooting for light weight and small while using the standard 4x8 trailer.
