You know Ned, I sometimes use a similar ploy with my middle aged sons; but not because I really mean it, but because I do not want them to put themselves out that much. They do not live close and while I want them here, I know they have family life responsibilities that take their time. So is it possible he is just saying it to relieve pressure on you?

I appreciate that possibility... And no doubt that is part of his motivation. Ultimately we don't have any other option. I'm their only child, if I don't make some small sacrifices to help them , I couldn't look myself in the eye.

Sleep platform

Postby Ned B » Mon Mar 07, 2016 1:15 am

Lori & I went to the annual RV show at the NY state fairgrounds last night. I was pretty tired but we got through the show and saw the latest offerings.
Found three class c motor homes which we loved, plus a couple of smaller travel trailers.

Most of it was typical RV fare, there was one commercial teardrop I liked size wise, but I didn't like that while it had a snazzy stainless steel sink and stove unit , they were of one piece. Fire & water in my book shouldn't live quite that close without a pot. Found a YouTube ad for one... Benroy style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMUW7HJBdQc

Lori voiced her usual concerns about how small it is... I said that's the point & the salesman laughed.

Lori liked the retro vibe on the larger white water line of trailers. Here's a quick Google search link for pictures: http://smalltrailerenthusiast.com/2015/ ... l-edition/

She's essentially happy with about a 17' Ttt with a bathroom & someplace to cook as well as a queen bed. Hmmm sounds like my other project...

This one first.

One very pleasant surprise was to find my 'dream' class C on display: an itasca navion 24V...

That's the rig I would buy tomorrow if I had the $ to spare. It is just 'enough' on a Mercedes chassis... Twin beds that convert to a king bed... Relatively decent for a motor home 19-23 mpg.

Ned,
Your statement "She's essentially happy with about a 17' Ttt with a bathroom & someplace to cook as well as a queen bed. Hmmm sounds like my other project... ", is exactly why I made my Camp Capsule... minus the 17' part... these requirements seem simple enough for our better halves to put up with us. :D

Ned, I took care of my parents for years. Not their only child but might as well have been. Now they are both gone and I can say I am glad I did. Just want to say hi from one parent helper to another.

I'm going to push this trailer build through as quickly as I am able, but this is Not my ideal Ttt. It is a means to an end.

Lori looks at teardrops and immediately says 'no way'. I am going to build a foamie wild goose, which I hope will fix her claustrophobic issues with tears.

As you can see, I had thoughts on renaming the thread if not the trailer.

There are two 'finished' sketchup designs... One 5x8 on an NT trailer (black frame) and one 4x8 on a HF ( red frame) I pulled a Prius model in for perspective.

Ultimately I think finances are going to win, I can get a functioning pod to sleep in for less if I go with the HF trailer. Less weight, less plywood, and about $300 cheaper at Least.

I’d go with the easiest one to make ... With foam , you can always make changes or add things later on if you want ... The “Thinking man’s trailer “... Start with a Good sturdy Box , add as you find need ...

The HF trailer is actually pretty good ,just assemble it carefully ... We used one for the Foamie #1 build and the whole thing was very light , I could easily move it about the yard by myself ... on gravel ... 8)
And ... 300 bucks is 300 bucks ...

Ned , just one thing ... the HF red paint tended to quickly fade to a dull pink left out in the sun (here) :R ... One could easily paint over the cleaned (degreased) parts before assembly , eliminating the need down the road .... Easy to do a neat paint job with just individual parts ... ;)

I'm definitely planning on repainting the pink frame, and this is going to be the 'entry level' trailer. it will have a bulkhead and minimal galley in the back. I'll run conduit for the possibility of 110 and a power center someday, but likely will only put in a set of 12v lights and power points in the cabin.

I'm going to keep it small, lightweight and minimal: non powered roof vent, shop built doors and wiley windows. I will run wiring up there for a fan eventually, easy enough since I'll be running wiring for a couple of 12v light fixtures etc already.

You might find that front shape a real drag behind that slippery TV. Mostly because of the front wall, a few sections of foam could make a nice angled air splitter to deal with that.

Ultra Light Foamie Weekender (sleep Platform)

Postby Ned B » Sun Mar 20, 2016 8:29 pm

Thanks rowerwet! I'm planning on a nose closer to the one on the 5' wide , if not a simple v nose. I'm sold on aero noses on trailers, that was a sketch and image capture

For scale
Not tonight as I'm bushed, but I'll fire up sketchup and get a more recent sketch tomorrow.

On A side note I found the following on an expedition portal trailer thread:

I like the scale of the trailer in relation to the jeep... Looks like a sleeper only trailer although it might have a hatch in the back that was the only image of that particular trailer on the thread.

The nose is only 10" deep, right now it is only an aero device, though I would probably put in a door inside to use the space.
