coroplast under canvas?

Postby mikeschn » Sun Dec 27, 2015 2:55 pm

Has anyone ever tried coroplast under canvas? I was just wondering if coroplast would work as a hard edge under canvas for a foamie, or if the heat and adhesion problems would overwhelm the benefits...

Not that ive tried this but its notoriously difficult to glue up.
I think youd have difficulty finding a thin film glue that would take

Hi-temp hot glue works on coroplast, but little else. When I made a "trunk" for my recumbent bike, I sewed the coroplast together with nylon wire ties and covered seams with vinyl tape. PVA adhesives like Titebond will not stick to coroplast.

Sorry to be a bit off topic but what sort of recumbent bike do you have?

Hi Dale, I ride a Haluzak Hybrid Race, a short wheelbase USS bike from ~2001. He stopped making bikes soon after that.

PM me to talk bent bikes.

Re: Canvas over Coroplast?.... Probably Not ... that glue situation makes it difficult ... For a hard edge , chipboard would be fine as long as it was waterproofed (the mix) which can be applied AFTER the gluing is done ... You only need to waterproof what isn’t glued.

Price is still a consideration ... savings lost on glue purchase ... :o

Almost a year before I built my camper made from coroplast, I did some tests. The adhesive material that held was Great Stuff foam. Have smear it on the surface to minimize the expansion properties though. The Stuff held very well. On the actual build, I also added pop rivets.

Here is the link to the post discussing my coroplast build. http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=49644

Great Stuff huh ?? Thanks Todah !!!
Years ago , we built RC planes out of Corroplast and had to resort to a tab and slot construction and very expensive specialty CA glues that were only marginal ... Tried all kinds of glues , some worked better than others , most didn’t even stick , even after preparing the surfaces by light sanding and wiping down the material with industrial prep solvents , 91% rubbing alcohol, vinegar, lemon juice ... nothing worked very well ...
But we will be sure to try some Great stuff !!! 8)

So one might stitch the pieces together (big job on a trailer, right?) and then maybe use paint to attach the canvas? A while back, when thinking of UV protection for coroplast, I found the following info:
http://www.coroplast.com/technicalinfo/faq.htm
Q: Is it possible to paint on Coroplast?

A: Krylon Fusion® Spray Paint for Plastics will provide a thin durable layer. Follow the manufactures directions for application of the spray paint. Brushes and rollers are not recommended for direct application of paints to Coroplast because the paint layer is too thick and can easily peel and delaminate. For art projects you may use brushed application of compatible paints on top of the "primer"/ base layer of the Krylon Fusion® Spray Paint for Plastics.

The paint is sold in 12 oz aerosol cans. Info on the paint:
http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion-for-plastic
Dry to touch:
15 minutes
Dry to handle:
1 hour
Net Weight:
12 oz.
Recoat Window:
Before 24 hours or after 7 days
Coverage:
Up to 25 square feet on a non-porous surface
Application Conditions:
50 to 90 degrees; and humidity below 85%
Clean up:
Mineral spirits

Looks pricey. Just an idea. Maybe a launching point for other, much better ideas?

Here’s an idea for covering sections ( sides flat panels ) , use the smaller thin chipboard pieces , overlapped like panels on airplanes , then put the whole thing in a vacuum bag and make it all FLAT ... (with panels ) Painted with Aluminum paint it would look like a plane .... sorta’ ...
