Thank you for putting the "how to" videos together. They are very helpful.

In preparation for a upcoming trip I decided that I really needed to lighten up the spring rate on #2. I figure at the most my overall weight to never be over 600lbs. and that is stretching it.

One day while at Cabela's I noticed they had a boat trailer and I was looking at the suspension. It was very similar to the HF trailers, but only had one leaf since it was designed for aluminum boats. I had often wondered if it could be done and after seeing that I though why not go ahead and try it.

So I finally got around to it a few weeks ago. I can already tell a big difference in suspension suppleness.

It was very easy to do and took me about 30 minutes to do both sides. Once the spring is out you just unbolt the springs at the center and bend back the spring tabs. Remove two springs and then reinstall the bold and put back together.

#2 got some big shoes today. With the last trip out I found that I really needed some larger tires to get into the back country. When I got back I looked into options. With a 4 lug hub I was limited to what was available. Without changing the axle this is what I came up with. We shall see how this works on the next trip this week.

The solution? 1.25" wheel spacers https://amzn.to/2y1SrQi and ST175/80D13 tires https://amzn.to/2N7OWxj . The stock tire diameter is 20" and the ST175/80D13 are 24" .

The spacer:

The spring bolts are not a issue with this setup. Tire bulge to frame is 1.5". Already looks a lot more chunkier.

#2 held up well this last trip out. 800 miles, 4 days and 3 nights with rain, snow, dust, mud, and washboard roads. Spring mod and bigger tires made a big difference in performance!

That's a cool old Cherokee Chief you have there.

Oh boy.... that white stuff is coming. It's hard to believe we were in the 80's in NW PA over the weekend.

How was sleeping in the trailer under the snow, did you have to heat it in any way?

Did not stay in the snow zone on this trip. Temps did drop into the low 30's. It was warmer than a tent, but probably not by much. No supplemental heat on this trip. I may get a small heater to heat it at bed time and in the mornings though.

I cleaned it today and found a few minor issues that I will need to address before next trip.
