Foamie boats

Postby rowerwet » Fri Mar 11, 2016 5:05 pm

Just wanted to share some of the spin-off results from the foamie idea.
I started by building a plywood boat design using 1" foam. I actually have not entirely finished the boat, though it has been launched, anD well tested. I got caught up in my third foam boat design, and prefer it more.
However due to plenty of interest in the foamie mouseboat, I made an instructable and published it yesterday. At last Check it had over 3,300 views in less than 24 hours.
You can Google seafoam kayak or follow this link http://m.instructables.com/id/Seafoam-K ... nyone-Can/

That instructable is entered in a contest called "hand tools only", I would appreciate a vote if you like it. Contest ends April 11, 2016.

I went on to build a foamie SUP, it floats, and could be good, but I'm gonna have to rethink some of the design and construction. It isn't finished, but has given me a better idea of the issues to design for.

I wanted a regular styled kayak for myself, and had seen the idea a man named dave Lucas had come up with to make kayaks using layers of foam. He uses the bead type foam EPS, then has to coat it with fiberglass to keep it from sucking up water.

I designed a kayak design I named sawfish, at 12 feet and 23 pounds, it is a great boat.
I created an instructable for it that has won second place in two contests on Instructables.com. http://m.instructables.com/id/Sawfish-f ... t-wieght-/

This past winter I've created an eight foot version of sawfish for my kids. No instructable yet, but the boat has been tested and found to be perfect.

Thanks for doing the instructable. I've seen the mouse boat on you FB page and was hoping that you would do one.

Hobie cats are foam sandwich construction. Used to take care of several and rebuilt a few from parts of others. The foam core was just a little under 1/4" and very strong but still pretty flexible however difficult to repair when damaged.

I waited to finish my foamie mouseboat instructable for almost two years. Turns out that has become my most popular instructable yet.
Not only that, but in the month or so since I published it, it has inspired four builds.
Three have been completed 141030 thefirst is from somewhere in eastern Europe, he created this boat and a regular styled kayak that you can get free plans for from Nick Schade.

The next one came from Africa, from a city in Nigeria. 141029
He even copied my original foam hatch design, with fabric hinges.

Then I got this one from Australia 141026
I like the wing on the back, it must generate some down force at high speed. Just like those wings on the stupid little cars with fancy wheels and annoying exhaust.

Oh, GPW, you may know this guy, he knows you, and has built many foam airplanes.
I believe he is about to start a foamie teardrop soon.

Oops, turns out it is a motor mount,141027
He doesn't quite have it all worked out, but he sent me me a video of him zipping around on the water.
The ergonomics need a bit of help 141028

Now I just need a builder from south America and I'll have all of the continents
Right now I'm helping a builder in Florida, he can only get 1/2" foam so that makes an extra challenge

This is the third sawfish to be launched, built by a guy in the Czech Republic, they don't have gorilla glue there so he had to find a suitable substitute.
