On my build I ran the hatch to the bottom. Water is caught in gutter and flows to one side or the other. Then it will flow and drop out the bottom of the hatch. Hatch seals will be along the top behind the gutter. The sides of the galley are the same profile as the hatch so it can seal against the rear hatch wall when shut. Then a seal along the bottom inboard from where the water would drain out.

George, how much of gap did you leave between the inside of the hatch and the outside of the inner walls before covering?

And while you’re designing ....
Coming from an area that rains all the time ( raining right now ) , I’d Highly suggest incorporating some kind of DRIP Edge into any and every trailer build ... Even with firm gluing , careful painting , and covering with the BNS... water seems to be insidious and will find a way into the bottoms of our trailers ... However Water DIVERTED , and never getting in contact to the floor cannot do any damage ... Apologies for being so excited about this , but with recent results , the floor edges of the Foam Stream are finally Bone Dry ... and that’s after a heavy rain ... Every time we pass by it , we check underneath .... Dry !!! I know one day I’m going to grab a handful of Spider underneath while blindly feeling around underneath checking , so now that we know it does work in our situation , we might STOP checking . :frightened:

if you want to study waterproof hatches , go look at your car .... Soft rubber seals under uniform compression ...That’s the secret !!!

I think of this hatch design as similar to the wiley window, and your drip edge. Both rely on surface tension and gravity to work, instead of seals.
I have no seals on my hatch, and have never seen any leaks, even in 5 hours on the highway in rain showers.

It is not the rain I am worried about. I think the design is very water resistant even without seals. My worry is dust. I travel many a dusty road and that stuff gets into everything....

A light seal can work wonders for dust... they sell that lightweight foam seal at all the box stores...

if you have it "reasonably" air-tight, you can also add a filtered air source to create positive pressure to keep the dust out.

I'm currently working on a flap of painted canvas as a seal, with one end glued to the door, folded for stiffness.

OK, has anyone built this yet? I am overhauling my teardrop this winter, and I really like the generic design. If nobody has done one yet I will be more than happy to give it a shot.

As far as I know, no one has built this yet. If you build it, take lots of pics.

What would be the best glue to attach wood paneling to the inside of the foamie?
