From removing the fabric I know that you get a better adhesion to the foam because the little holes in the foam each end up with a dot of glue inside.
This locks the glue into the foam. Making a better bond than just gluing to the top layer of foam.
Peel testing proves this.
For foam to foam joints, I also perforate the faces to be glued, I haven't been able to break one on a joint, so I think this makes the foam joints tougher.
The foam breaks next to the glue line.
