The stays I saw in a video of old Esterel caravan assembly where having a thumb screw to fix at any window angle. The action is similar to telescoping tripod leg, but on a smaller scale.
OP827, I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. The polycarbonate sunshade/rockguard window on my Airstream is held up by two simple struts. They consist of an aluminum bar (~1/2" x 1/4" x 18") that telescopes into a C-channel extrusion. The bar is tapped at one end to accept a thumbscrew which is tightened to hold the window open.
