standie floor thickness ?

Postby rustytoolss » Mon Aug 08, 2016 8:07 pm

My 6x10 standie will only have human traffic weight down the middle (center 2'x10') of the floor . The rest of the floor (east/west sides) will have couch-beds/ cabinets/ storage on each side , with a rear entry.
So would 1/2" floor thickness be OK, in an effort to help save overall weight. I weigh 185 lbs .

1/2 will flex but I do not see a problem with 1/2 plywood It is used on roofs with 24" oc rafter all the time. On a camper it is supported by the frame on the side too.

i am building the same type of thing, about half way through. 1/2in baltic birch seems perfect to me. But it all depends on how far apart your supports are. mine are 19in on centre.

I'm flooring my teardrop with 1/2" BC grade Pine plywood. I believe it's 4-ply. My bed converts to a sofa, so I have a recessed box in the floor that is around 39" wide and 58" long if i remember correctly. I weigh 195 and can stand on it no problem. There is flex when I stand in the center, but it does not feel like it's going to break or anything. I have the entire perimeter secured with 3" wood screws every 3"

In my opinion, I think spanning 24" with 1/2" plywood won't be a problem at all. There might be minimum flexing, but nothing to be concerned about.
