Family trip of a lifetime.

I believe the big orange vehicle with the very large tires is for driving/hauling stuff on the polar ice cap. Quick Google image search found that it is part of a U.S. Army "Sno-Train" (clicky).

You're having a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing!

Your son is going to have a "badge of honor" or battle scar that will be unique to him and he'll have lots of stories and memories to go with it. Glad everyone is okay.

PS. You've been added to the thread, Teardrops & Tiny Trailers with Lifting Roofs, page 1, about a quarter way down the first screen:

Blog post of the day we crossed the boarder into Alaska! We were greeted by some really rough roads and more swamp.
The one campground had a whole bunch of military vehicles from when the alaska highway was built.

The orange things with the silver colored nozzles look like large blow torches or weed burners to me. I see fuel tanks, hand pressure pumps, heat guards and igniters in the nozzles. The may have used them for melting tar into seams and cracks in the roadway.

Yes, it sucks that the pm feature is gone on this forum. Trip is going well, having car trouble but were in Guelph ontario now!

They looked a bit like flame throwers but we couldnt think of what they would be used for. The seam sealer stuff for roads makes sense though!
