skinning in canvas while flat

Postby Pwfyrcat1 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 2:05 pm

So I've been doing doing a search for anyone who has skinned their exterior walls while lying flat, and can't seem to find any information.

So any advice would be good.

My plan is to roll out TB2 across the surface that is already scored, lay down the fabric that I have and smooth it down and let it dry. Does this sound reasonable?

Should I glue down any excess or overhang? Or just glue to the edge and trim it? Knowing that as the camper comes together, the edges are going to be secured together with overlapping material?

cheers and thx

I do not recall anyone building like that yet although it has been discussed a few times. A overlap is preferred for strength on the outside. It ties the roof to the sides and the sides to the floor. Not to say you could not run a couple inch wide strip of canvas along those lines once assembled though. Just remember that you would have to allow a wide enough seam to cover the end cut of the foam.

If you are interested I posted my canvasing methods in my build. Worked out great and was fairly simple. The fist attempt starts half way down this page http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=54099&start=405 . A more refined method on this page http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=54099&start=435 and doing the roof near the bottom here http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=54099&start=450 . The hatch is probably the closest to what you may be looking for, near the bottom of page here http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=54099&start=510 . Hope this helps.

I did the inside roof on my fiance that way. The foam will curve as it dries. I was able to pull it flat when I glued the roof onto the sides. I'm glad I did not do it on the sides.

If you’re going to skin the outside flat on a table , it would be a good idea to skin the INSIDE first ... Pre shrinking your fabric might be a Good idea too ... We plan to cover our next project in pieces , then use “reforcing strips" to stick it all together ... a good chance to use Fiberglass tape , for those that feel they need the extra strength , ( all this is in the Big thread )
There’s no place like Foam !
