Wall thickness vs. Roof thickness

Postby Pwfyrcat1 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 2:35 pm

If the walls of my camper are 2 inches thick, does the roof also need to be the same thickness? Or can I go with a 1 inch roof? Or should I?

I know lots of questions today

I like insulation, so I'd go with same or thicker.

How wide? How high? I see some small campers being shrunk inside by thick materials, poor design. If you need the extra insulation for very cold weather camping then I think heavy, thick insulation might be needed. Our camper has only 3/4" Styrofoam in the roof and none on the walls. We have camped on cold nights (32°) with only an electric blanket. We still had the ceiling vent open which probably made the ceiling insulation moot. If you are thinking of sun and hot weather, then you should think bright white paint and lots of ventilation.

Is this a foamy or a sandwiched-wall build?

For a space as small as a camper, insulation isn't the issue here. You'll stay fairly toasty (or cool) whether you choose 1-inch or 2-inch foam. But if my memory serves me ... isn't 2-inch foam just a few bucks cheaper than 1-inch foam? And here's the thing: It can support 8x more weight when bending. 8x! So unless you're pressed for headroom, go with the 2-inch or 1.5-inch foam. It might cost a little more, but you'll never worry about a hail storm :)

We're with Andrew .... hail storms of falling limbs ... We’ve already had a limb go through the roof and into the cab , and that was through a “membrane" ( very thin) 3’32” plywood , and 2” of EPS (beaded) foam , and ceiling paper ... ( commercial RV)
