Attack of the Killer Mealworms/protect your Foamie

Postby rustytoolss » Wed May 24, 2017 5:01 pm

All of us with Foamie campers at doomed ! I just read an article on CNN that says Mealworms can and will eat Styrofoam and plastic  :? .. They can eat the amount about the size of any average pill per day ! :frightened: The report did not say if covering your camper with canvas prevent the worms from targeting your TD  . It's just like a 1950's B movie..Attack of the Killer Mealworms.

Hmm... Well a mealworm is actually the larval form of a grain beetle, and they eat grains of all sorts. Seems that I've heard about some biodegradable plastics being made from corn. Don't know about foam, though.

In any case, the beetles can't fly, so I wouldn't expect mealworms to be an issue for your foamie.

After all these years we should have seen something like this . Most we’ve seen is tiny holes made by Fire Ants so they can camp inside and avoid the rainy season…

I had some foam stored in the barn for maybe ten years and it did have some tiny holes in it. I doubt there is much to worry about with covered foam.

Rusty , way back in the beginning of the Foamie section here, one of the morbid fears was your foamie trailer hitting a Flying Turkey and exploding … But it never happened … So we upped the scare to a flying Frozen Turkey … still nothing to report …

I talked about it last fall on my build thread. This winter i had no good pieces of pmf to test. I snapped some pieces of plain foam in -15f and they were a fair bit more brittle than they are now, but thats not really a test...
This summer i plan to make a few pieces to test in the winter.
Because i plan to do a road trip north of inuvik with mine in the winter.

So far the coldest my foamie has seen up here in New England hasn't cause any spontaneous combustion or implosion.
Really onece the fabric is on, you gain the strength of the fabric which is the real strength of the whole structure.
The foam is ony use in compression in my walls, and even a foot of snow on the roof of the tear didn't compress the foam walls.

No worries , just that foam does shatter at very low temperatures … so be sure to dodge those flying frozen turkeys … Then again , we’ve never heard of anybody having problems in the cold North … ;)
