Primer for the canvas on your Foamie

For the primer coat to cover the canvas/TBII. Does it matter what brand to use ? Or is this a place to spend some extra $$ ?

Not sure if it matters, but I have been using Glidden Gripper for all my priming needs.

The paint I plan to use is Sherwin Williams HGTV High Gloss Interior/Exterior (paint and primer all in one) . Thought I should note that. I did not notice that it was an "all in one (paint/primer)" until now. I doubt that using a base primer would hurt anything. But unsure if it is needed.
I did send a question to Sherwin Williams , to ask if painting a virgin surface should be base primed first???

Rusty, probably depends on how much you want to fill your weave … we found about 3 coats of a “primer” ( we’ve been also using Gripper) with some very light sanding in between ( more dust and nit removal than “sanding” ) makes for a pretty smooth surface … same as we use on our Art panels …
Our new paint for the FS roof is also ( self-priming) ,but we still put 2 coats of Grripper first though … old habits …

Gripper was cheaper than the exterior paint I was using for mine. So I went ahead and primed it with two coats to try and get some of the soaking up of paint into the fabric taken up by the primer.

I really didn't bother to try to fill in the weave. I like the coarse texture...

Having said that, we used the aluminum paint... It filled it in a little, but not much...

A year later I had to touch up one side, and it's noticeably smoother than the other side. But we are not creating show piece cars here, just rough and ready campers, right!?

I am new to the forum, but just finished a foamie build. I used a mix of Gripper, latex caulk and light weight spackle, spread it on with a flexable bondo spreader. I did two coats with light sanding after each coat. I finished it with two coats of Glidden Premium Exterior paint in satin finish. It turned out really nice, looks more like fiberglass that canvas.
