Foamie weight? (not including trailer, just the basic struct

Postby zuren » Tue Aug 22, 2017 1:38 pm

I've read through a number of threads here including the "truck camper" foamie and a fiberglass wrapped foamie where I got a couple numbers to get an idea of how much these things weigh but I'm hoping to get more examples.

In the "truck camper" thread, the poster claimed about 400 lbs. and there was no "in bed" section of the camper; it rested/sealed to the bed rails so it was closer to a tall bed topper with a short cab-over section than a fully sealed slide-in, cabover camper and weighed 400 lbs. The fiberglass foamie thread claimed 1000-1200 lbs. but never posted a confirmed weight or weights of the coach and trailer separately; pretty sure that 1000-1200 lbs. included the trailer frame.

I'm researching the possibility of building a foamie as a traditional slide-in camper with a pop-top and I'm trying to get an idea of weight. Has anyone weighed the standalone coach portion of their foamie teardrop or other foam trailer build?

I realize amenities, features, etc. add weight so I'm just wanting the weight on a basic, livable shell that may have some wiring in it. I'm attempting to scope out what a foam slide-in, pop-top truck camper shell might weigh and cost to build. Cost can be flexible (within reason) but weight is not to meet the payload limits for a 1/2 ton truck.

A Four Wheel Camper pop-top, shell slide-in weighs around 950 lbs. and costs $11,000 new. I'm hoping that a foamie would beat both of those numbers.

Thanks!

From what I've seen, weights can be all over the map. It all depends on the builder and how much and what size wood he uses.

My trailer before I added the battery box weighed 480lbs combined. The HF trailers weigh 253lbs, that means the body weighed about 227lbs.

Weights I noticed during the build.

One 4x8 sheet of XPS foam 2" thick weighs 10lbs.
One 4x8 sheet of 7/*16" OBS Weighs about 46lbs.
Windows weighed 10lbs.
Teardrop doors weighed 28lbs.
9'x12' 10oz. canvas weighted 6.60lbs.

Hope that helps.
George.

My 4x8 trailer plus tongue box and mattress was 560 lbs. Subtraction
of the advertised trailer weight of 260 lbs shows a less than 300 lb
cabin.
Accurate, I'm not that sure. I expect that weight could be 50 lbs less.
BUT to do a slide in, you will need to add some wood wear strips and
add some weight there.

Consider this , plywood is 57 lb. / cu. ft. Foam is 2 lb . / cu.ft. … More Foam = Lighter … more wood = Heavier … let that be your guide … ( George knows !!! )
There’s no place like Foam !
