Air conditioning? Do you have it?

Postby jimbo69ny » Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:17 pm

I am in the middle of my build and I am wondering if I should incorporate a small wall mounted ac unit. Its no simple task but its doable.

I am wondering if any other foamie builders have added an ac unit. Ive never even camped in anything other than a tent so IDK if its even needed. The wife wants one so I guess it kind of is needed. haha

What do you think?

It’s surely not needed where my wife and I camp which is almost always in Montana or Idaho. The Fantastic fan handles our hot weather needs.

Besides, we never “camp” where there 120 volts.

I suppose if I lived somewhere between Texas and Florida I’d be whistling a different tune.

Thank you very much for your input! We live in upstate New York however we won’t be doing as much camping here. We love to travel and we will definitely be spending time in New Orleans, Orlando, and Raleigh

It’s all about humidity, if you camp with high humidity you need AC. I live near Phoenix and have no need for AC. It can be 115 degrees and in 2 hours I can be in the mountains where the nights are in the 70’s with low humidity. Or a 8 hour drive can be at 10,0000 feet and have nights in the 30’s even in August. We just plan to camp where the weather is comfortable for us.

This was a picture I took during my build.

The time was 8:00 p.m. I believe the date was June 1. It's not shown but I'm sure the humidity was around 70%

As GPW said, down South A/C is a necessity if you're going to camp in the summer.

The really Good Thing , is with Foamies , they’re so well insulated , you only need a tiny AC .. cheap 5,000 BTU AC in the FS and you can hang meat in there in a few minutes … Like camping in a big Beer cooler … Heating too ( less necessary in the South ) only a litte goes a long way … My $15.00 Walmart milkhouse heater raises the temp 1 degree per minute … We tried it out in rare 25F weather here as a “ test” … Wasn’t long we were ripping our jacket off … getting too hot … :o

Aggie , that’s pretty WARM even by our standards …

The Big Pink AC is on a sliding tray.

Not a real good picture, but shows the tray mounted on a shelf.

If you plan on camping out west or in the desert, a diy 5 gallon swamp cooler might be your best bet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHbQYajfGqM. You can run it on a battery and it works really well, whereas an AC needs 120v or a generator.

Swamp coolers don't work with high humidity though.

Thanks but that’s too large for me. I’m trying to be as light as possible.
