Gripper now PPG Seal Grip

Postby nelsclan » Tue May 18, 2021 7:27 pm

Hello, all-

Hadn't seen anything on this, so I thought I'd share what I've heard.

I stopped by my local PPG Paint store to see if they had any mis-tint exterior paint (they did - I got 3 gallons for $5 apiece), & thought I'd see what I could get any inside info about PPG Gripper. Well, according to the counter-person, PPG now calls Gripper primer 'Seal Grip Gripper'.

https://www.ppgpaints.com/products/inte ... mer-sealer

He also said that, as far as he knows, the formulation is exactly the same as it's always been. They only eliminated the Glidden Gripper SKU to streamline inventories, & now the Seal Grip name has superseded, or actually augmented, the Gripper name for the existing product.

He was very interested in the PMF concept - it was the first he'd heard of it. I told him I'd keep him posted as my project(s) progress. BTW, I'm taking a page from Rowerwet's book & attempting to build a boat to practice & develop details for a future TTT, presently in the design stage.

Thanks for listening-

It may be --similar ingrediants. It's still some nasty stuff:

Thanks for sharing!

If ingredients are nasty, perhaps it should stay on exterior wall only. Oh wait, I am confused, this is for both interior and exterior. If I'm only camping in it 2 days a year, it should be ok I think. Also, I suspect if you look at most paint ingredients, they are not clean either :_)

I found instructions on line for pmf using TBII and latex paint.

Question, what is better? latex or acrylic paint?
If i'm using GG, then I should use acrylic paint since it's an acrylic primer, right?
"If you’re in the paint world or have done some research using latex paint over oil-based is not advised. Latex cannot cure and “stick” when applied over an oil-based layer. People who make this mistake quickly discover this as the latex paint cracks, bubbles, and peels. With that said, quality latex paint can cover oil-based paints if the surface is properly prepared."

But if I'm not using GG, then which is better? It says acrylic is more long lasting.

It seems to me acrylic is the clear winner unless I'm missing something.

Personally I would use Gripper as the base primer, then cloth adhesive then waterproofing layers, build it up several coats.

Then sanding / fairing if required

then an outermost UV protection paint, and for color, known compatible with Gripper.

I don't think there is much hazard when dry. While liquid and possibly from dust when sanding there may be some hazard - but doesn't everything?

Look at the MSDS (now SDS?) for foam. WHO now says "probable carcinogen". I wouldn't worry. (You could use cork, very natural and benign. I even like the sound of a "corky")

More risk to camp in a foamie or stay home? IDK. Just another choice.

They are not the same formula:

SealGrip (from the current MSDS)

Too bad!

But might be as good, or even better for PMF purposes

Worth testing anyway if reasonably priced.

Key question for me is tensile adhesion holding the canvas to the foam.

Not so much for those using TB2 underneath, then it's just adhesion **to** the outer layer of the canvas, and of course waterproofing
