Should gumbo include okra?

Postby stbuch » Sun Aug 27, 2006 6:58 pm

Since I consider myself to be the master of all recipes that begin with the trinity and a roux-I feel that it is time to ponder the question=

Should a proper gumbo include okra?

I say yes 'cause that's the way my mama taught me!

Sherrie, it is also the way my mother taught me as well BUT I hate okra so I don't use it in my gumbos or use a minimal amount of canned okra since it will just about disapear when cooking...

I don't like okra either, but what would gumbo be without having to avoid the okra in every spoonfull. Hummmm.... ???

(I dont like celery also... try avoiding that in your tater salad.)

gumbo

Postby CPASPARKS » Sun Aug 27, 2006 9:26 pm

I love okra. My wife always puts okra in her gumbo.

I have had it in many restaurants that serve it without okra.

It must be a personal taste. I think probably the okra gives it a good consistency.

Be sure to sprinkle file' on it (ground sassafrass).

okra in gumbo

Postby CPASPARKS » Mon Aug 28, 2006 5:09 am

Stbutch,
Your momma teaching you to put okra in your gumbo speaks volumes.
I think that it is important to our heritage to pass little things like that on to the next generation.
Many of the things that our family says and does, has been passed down from our previous generations.
I think we should be very proud of our heritage.
Especially our "Southern" heritage!

Okra all the way in gumbo!!!

The only way okra should be cooked is breaded and fried. I'll be down Friday about noon.

If it doesn't have okra, it ain't gumbo. Which is why I don't eat gumbo, but I'll gladly eat that other stuff that's made without it.

My personal belief is that modern-day boiled okra evolved from Mesozoic Era slugs.

GUMBO WITHOUT OKRA Where are you from NYC?

I like okra like my oysters. Anyway I can get it. Same for Gumbo. I don't think I have ever had any bad gumbo as long as it wasn't scorched in the process.

Wish I could come to your get together but probably best since I doubt you have a big enough pot to satisfy my appetite for it.
Meet you at camp
